I'm so very sorry for the lateness of the new post. But this is the first time LJ is working for me again.  I wrote a sonnet for you but is now forever lost in the glitches :(
So no funny business here, I know you want to get back to the usual game ASAP.

There is a substitute on dreamwidth in case LJ is having trouble again.

The usual things:

From then on, they avoided each other.

George had never sought David out in the first place and he was too embarrassed and proud to do it now for fear of David's reaction. The other man had made it clear that George meant nothing to him and after all, why should he? George had treated him worse than the scrapings of mud from the bottom of his shoes. Even now he didn't quite understand why it suddenly mattered. So David had lost it with him. Big deal. He'd never wanted anything to do with him in the first place, he'd never asked for David's attention... and yet it did matter. Because David had spelled it all out so clearly and because everything he'd said had been absolutely true.

George tried to comfort himself. He tried to tell himself that he was falling for it again, that there was no sincerity behind the facade, but he no longer believed it. Maybe this one really had been different. Maybe he and David could have been friends. Maybe...

None of them had ever lost their tempers with him. None of them had ever cared enough. George had been dispensable and yet with David...

He tried to tell himself it was loss of face. Cameron had been incensed that he had been rebuffed. He was from Eton! he wasn't used to being turned down... but it didn't ring true, not anymore...

Ok, so he'd messed up. He could probably have got to know Cameron, he could probably... possibly? have liked him. So granted, it was a shame but in the greater scheme of things... Oh well. Spilt milk and all that, it was too late and there was nothing to be done about it now.

And yet, George found himself sitting in the Commons on the 28th June with the sole intention of watching David's maiden speech.

He couldn't explain it to himself. He'd written the other man off forever after their last face to face meeting and yet... He wanted to hear it. He shook his head at himself. Maybe he was trying to catch him out, to find the evidence that he was just a shallow, two faced Etonian, hidden somewhere between the lines, because what other reason could there possibly be?

David had already been there when he'd arrived and he'd taken care not to sit too closely, hoping he wouldn't be spotted but when David got to his feet, George's eyes were glued to him. Well, to his back. Or part of his back. Well, as much as you could glue your eyes to someone sat at an awkward angle to you.

The speech itself was filled with descriptions of Witney, David's Oxford constituency and George would have been lying if he'd tried to claim David wasn't managing to sell it well. He could have been reading straight out of a tourist brochure. George would have to have a poke around at the history of Tatton Park and see what he could dredge up in time for his own speech the next week, to compete. He fleetingly wondered why it had to be a competition and then dismissed the thought in favour of paying more attention again and his lips curled at the tips slightly when David paid tribute to his immediate predecessor, who had crossed the floor to join Labour during the previous parliament.

All in all, the mockery was gentle, the praise and admiration for the area, genuine and there was no trace of Etonian arrogance to be found between the lines or otherwise. George couldn't help but feel that he should have liked to congratulate David on his performance despite that being quite out of the question. Instead he went to stand, having no interest in any further parliamentary business that day but at just that moment David turned his head and caught George's eye. They stared at each other. David's face fleetingly displaying unconcealed surprise at George's presence, before all expression was ironed out again and he turned away, continuing on out of the chamber.

OP: YAY! It's back!

Loved this chapter, authoranon, it has the real Austen touch with the exchange of glances. :)

I hope you use the thread on the new post to tell people when you update by the way.
