Nick swallowed uncomfortably but didn't say anything.
"I just don't understand why he doesn't trust me. Ten years and suddenly he doesn't believe a word I say." He pushed his chair under the table. "I can't leave it like this, I have to know what's going on."
"Jealousy...... can do strange things to people......" Nick stared hard at the floor.
"Maybe it can," David sighed. "But I still can't leave it here. I'm not losing my best friend over something that's only going on in his head."
"But surely he shouldn't be encouraged......."
"I know you mean well," said David softly. "And I appreciate it, really I do but he matters, I can't, I won't pretend he doesn't. Thanks for the massage, I'll see you later alright? if I'm quick I can still catch him."
And Nick was left alone cursing himself in every language he knew.

After a few enquiries David traced his friend back to number eleven and confronted him finally in the hallway.
George's head snapped up and David stared at the sorry looking figure, feeling every bit of anger dissipate at the sight. He stepped forward. "George..."
"What do you want?"
"What do I want?" Asked David with a frown. "I want us to sort this out, I want you to take your resignation back, I want my friend to trust me again, I want to kiss you. What can I have? maybe the first three." He tried a smile but George looked away. "Is anything you say the truth? Has anything between us ever been anything but lies?"
"I told you how it was between us, how it has to be. I told you I can't choose." David reached out to touch his arm but George flinched away. "But then you DID choose!" He hissed. "And it doesn't sound like you held anything back! I'm ashamed of you, David. I can barely look at you! You're not at all who I thought you were."
"It was a massage!" Gasped David. "A massage! That's all!"
"He told me!"
"Told you what?"
"He told me!" Shouted George, creating distance between them. "Everything! He told me about everything you've done!"
"Everything I've...."
"Everything! How you've let him do things that I can't even say! On your desk! After everything you said to me! You could have just told me. If you'd just been honest...... but you hid it. Why didn't you just tell me you were going to get together with him? Don't you know how much it hurt to hear it from Clegg?"
David was gaping. "Get together......? On my desk......? My God, you.....you think we had SEX???"
"I know you did."
"But we didn't, we've never...I don't even really know how.... I've.... it's not true!"
"For fuck's sake, David!" George turned away to hide the tears in his eyes
"Nick told you we had sex on my desk?" Asked David, his face paler than George had ever seen it. "Nick told you that?"
"Yes!"
"It's not true," whispered David. "George, bloody hell, listen to me, it's not true! I swear to you! God, I mean.... here? it's certainly not practical if it's even possible!"
"I don't believe you."
Tears shot to David's eyes and then he grabbed George and kissed him hard.
George staggered backwards and pulled away. "You-"
"I promise I'm telling you the truth!" David stared into his eyes. "I've never done anything with Nick, other than kiss him, nothing! I wouldn't do that after everything I said to you, you know I wouldn't!"
George swallowed. "I..."
"George," pleaded David.
"I...."
David kissed him again and then stared back into the shocked hazel eyes. "You know I'd never do that to you. You know ME!"
"I... ." George bit his lip and then shook his head. "But he said... He sagged suddenly. "Fuck and I just accepted.... I thought...... I can't believe......" He shook his head again, bewildered.
Another kiss. "It's alright." David slid his fingers through the short slightly curly hair and George raised his head. He still looked heartbreakingly confused and this time when David kissed him it was more passionate.
George pulled away. "I don't know why I thought..."
"It doesn't matter." David pulled him close again and breathed into his hair. "It doesn't matter, alright?"
Only of course, it did.
