He cursed, and automatically pinched the bridge of his nose between his forefinger and thumb, Nick noticed David’s gesture of discomfort and chanced a glance in his direction which didn’t go unnoticed by Andrew. David noticed the silence and lowered his hand and his eyes flitted between the two pairs that were looking at him. He noticed Andrew’s eyes glance up at the mistletoe and then back at David, a small smirk pulled at the corners of his mouth before he resumed his line of questioning directed at Nick, while David looked on, his eyes wide open, silently making a plea in Andrew’s direction.
Nick defended his line more than adequately, answering the questions he’d been asked a hundred and one times before with precision. David would have been dutifully impressed with Nick’s performance compared to his own if he wasn’t working so hard keeping his composure, he could feel his skin becoming flushed beneath the cotton of his shirt as he willed it no to creep above his collar. He listened as Nick gave a leisurely message wishing one and all a Merry Christmas and he knew that he’d be prompted to speak in a few moments.
David cleared his throat and added his own sentiments to those of Nick concerning the Coalitions direction for the coming year and gave his best wishes for those celebrating over the yuletide. He gave a smile that was both congratulatory and hopeful in Nick’s direction not really wanting to look in Andrew Marr’s direction again while the cameras were on air, then he realised that he probably looked like a love sick fool, grinning at Nick with heart’s in his eyes, so David did the last thing he really wanted to do, he looked at Andrew Marr. As soon as his eyes settled on Andrew’s he knew this was a moment he would live to regret.
“As you can see, we’ve decorated the studio accordingly...” Nick looked round, nodding appreciatively at the tree. “...and you may have noticed what’s dangling above your heads...” Nick turned his head upwards and smiled, where as David looked at his hands as they rested in his lap, dreading what was coming next. “I imagine you both like to keep certain traditions.”
“Depends on the tradition.” David interrupted bluntly. Nick stifled a laugh and they both let Andrew continue.
“How about the one involving the meeting of lips underneath the mistletoe?” Nick’s eyes widened a little and his eyebrows arched in surprise, whereas David clenched his jaw as he narrowed his eyes, making a mental note to remind him to reprimand his PR team over this stunt and inform them he was never appearing on the Andrew Marr show ever again. Someone’s head would roll for this.
“So how about it?”
“Are you serious?” Nick asked, a slightly nervous chuckle resonated though his voice.
“Why not?” Andrew shrugged. Nick scratched at the crown of his head blushing slightly and looked at David.
“How about it, David, a quick peck can’t hurt” David’s eyes widened as he searched Nick’s face with great intensity for a sign of jest as he processed Nick’s soft whisper. “Come on, let’s just get this over and done with, and we can get out of here.” David’s eyes darted from Nick’s to Andrew’s before closing. He let out a long sigh and nodded his consent.

Then the moment came, as brief as it was, it felt like a lifetime basked in opulence as Nick’s warm, soft lips finally met his. The fleeting connection sparked David’s senses into life, the tantalising sensations quickly coursed through his body and as Nick pulled away he was left hanging, suspended in a moment he instantly knew he would always need to experience again, just to confirm that what he had just felt had been that intoxicating.
By the time that David had regained a grip on his faculties, Nick was on his feet, shaking hands with Andrew, a shameless smile on his face as if what had happened was an everyday occurrence. David stood up and reluctantly clasped Marr’s hand; he refrained from reacting to the other man’s smirk and inciting comments, thinking that kissing his deputy on live, national TV was already one unprofessional act too many he’d carried out today.
The two colleagues were whisked back out to their car, David striding purposefully down the corridors with Nick half a stride behind him, still smiling playfully as he could hear David’s constant chunter and unease as it entered the atmosphere in a mumbled tirade. Once in the car David had calmed down slightly, his breathing back to a steady rate and his skin had lost the red blemish of rage.
“How dare they do that?” He turned to Nick “That could ruin us.” He found Nick smiling fondly at him, a glimmer of charm in his eyes, that David found calming.
“I agree it isn’t ideal, David, but I’m sure most people will take it for the fun it was intended in and people who will kick off about it are going to be those who kick up a fuss about anything we do.” His smiled widened. “Relax, it is Sunday after all.”
“You’re right.” David rested his arm against the window and mumbled into the heel of his palm as it cradled his face. His eyes looking out the window, but unseeing the world as it sped past him, lost in his thoughts of the exquisite feeling of Nick’s lips pressed firmly against his.
“...and anyway, don’t tell me that wasn’t worth getting out of bed for this morning, because I won’t believe you.”
David feared looking at Nick; he could hear the aplomb dripping in Nick’s delightful tones as he huskily growled the remark, and David needed to hide his reaction to Nick’s words as he bit his bottom lip to curb the ever surging lust, and as desirable a cocksure and self-assured Nick apparently appeared to be to him, he couldn’t risk letting Nick know how right he was.
