Outraged, David protested, “James, I’m trying to be serious. I’m trying to explain.” He took a deeply calming breath, and knotted his hands over his stomach. He did, however, stubbornly meet his partner’s eyes. “You and I both know how delicate pregnancies can be. Just last year, Gillian lost one, you remember that?” James nodded, slowly, comprehension dawning. “Wait until after we’ve seen a doctor, checked everything’s alright?”

As David ducked his head to avoid his gaze, James murmured, “I understand. He’s alright. We’ll wait.”

“You’re sure?” David’s head snapped up.

“Of course. But this means that you’ll have to invite them over to dinner to tell them - your folks too, mind.” At the horror filling David’s face, James smirked. “It’s really not going to be that bad. My parents’ acceptance will cancel out your parents’… traditionalism and we’ll all live happily ever after.” When David still looked doubtful, James said, “You’re in coalition, you’re supposed to know how to compromise these days.”

After a moment of silence, David nodded. “Alright then. But I get to pick the date.”

“Deal.” James was getting to his feet, and held out his hands for David. “Come on.”

Trusting his partner, without asking what he was doing, David accepted the hands and got to his feet. He had only been guided to the hallway when realisation dawned that they were headed to the bedroom. Wickedly, he asked, “In the mood to celebrate?”

With a chuckle, James returned with another question. “I thought we’d done quite enough of that to land us in this situation, don’t you? Wouldn’t you rather go through the babys’r’us catalogue?”

“James…” As they reached the bedroom door, David grabbed at James’ elbow and spun him about. He forced the younger man’s back into the wood of the door, with a thud, and pressed up close, moulding against him. Reaching up to wrap his hands around the back of James’ neck, David murmured, “We have eight months, give or take, to shop. Right now, we have good news, and I intend to exploit it.” With that, he sealed his lips over his partner’s.
