Welcome to our eighth prompt post.

As ususal, here are a few things to keep in mind:

1) All fills for prompts of the earlier prompt posts go in the post the prompt was posted in. No re-posting or splitting up prompts and fills.
2) Self-prompt when you post unprompted fic. (This means posting what the fill is about in a first comment, like a real ( Read more... )

Sequel Fill: Strictly with Permission 1/2 anonymous December 26 2010, 12:28:13 UTC
Halfway through the third episode of Strictly, Rachel phoned. William paused the television and Vince hesitated for a moment, before answering the call on his mobile.

He was fine, he assured her. He wasn't alone, William was keeping him entertained, and he had no intention of falling on his sword either metaphorically or literally. He listened patiently to her own trials with the press, and then, just when they would normally have been exchanging perfunctory words of love before signing off, she said. "I'd like to speak to William, if he's there."

"He is," Vince said. "Just a moment."

He passed the phone over to William, who looked at it curiously.

"Rachel," he said. "What a pleasant surprise amid these trying circumstances. What can I do for you?" He frowned as he listened, and when he spoke again, his voice was deeper, more hesitant. "Of course I'll look after him. That's why I'm here, after all." He fell silent again and frowned at the phone. Vince hoped that Rachel wasn't bending his ear unreasonably, He wasn't, after all, the only person in his marriage inclined to be melodramatic about their opinions. "Well," William said at length. "I'd have to talk to Ffion about that, but I can't deny--" Vince heard Rachel cut him off. "Relax, I'd never dream of crossing a lady. Vince, your good lady wife for you."

Vince took the phone back form him, a little perplexed by what he'd just heard. "Rachel?"

"Let him look after you, Vince. You must need it after a day like today."

"Rachel," Vince said, a little exasperated, "I really am fine, dear."

"Just do as you're told and let him take care of you, Vincent Cable, and I might not come after you with a frying pan tomorrow," Rachel told him. "Love you." She rang off, before Vince had the chance to say it back.

Vince made as if to pocket the phone again, but paused, and turned it off completely, leaving it on the side side. He wasn't in the mood for further conversations. When he looked up, William was looking at him oddly.

"Is there a problem?" Vince asked.

"No, no problem at all," William said. "I just need to phone my lovely wife about something, that's all."

Vince held out a hand. "Be my guest," he said. It had been nice, just the two of them, but the real world always would intrude. He sank back down on the sofa, feeling old and tired, and listening idly to William's conversation."

"Ffion, flower of my heart, I've just had a very strange conversation with Rachel Cable." William glanced at Vince for a moment, but slid his eyes away before Vince could meet his gaze. "She says she's been talking to you and I'm led to believe that the pair of you have been employing womanly wiles." William frowned, scratching his head. "That's rather unconventional of you if I may say so, dear ... No, of course I'm not questioning your judgement, my sweet, I wouldn't dream of such lese-majeste ... Of course I'm not unhappy about it ... all right, all right, your whim is my command."

He sat back next to Vince a moment later, his expression stunned, awed and terrified. "I don't think I will ever understand the female of the species," he said.

"I've always worked under the supposition that we're probably not supposed to do so," Vince said thoughtfully. "Though I can't deny that Rachel was being odder than usual this evening."

William used the remote to resume the DVD, but the tone of the evening had somehow changed. Even his most lavish praise for Anne Widdecombe failed to inspire Vince to sarcasm, and in the end they both fell silent, William's arm slung along the top of the sofa behind Vince's head. The jokes soon fell to silence, and when Vince looked away from the television screen it was to see William watching him intensely, eyes dark in the half-light, with a startling and unexpected intensity that in anyone else Vince would have called desire.

This is, Vince thought, a very bad time for the elephant in the room to make an appearance. Relaxed from warmth and trusted company, drained from a day full of emotional excesses, he doubted that he had the energy both to say no and mean it.

"Hard though it may be to believe," William said quietly. "I do have permission for this, both from your good lady and mine."

He leaned in, and Vince realised his intent mere seconds before William's lips met his.

Vince hadn't expected fireworks. He was too old for fireworks, too grumpy and two battered by life for the earth to move. Nonetheless, it did quaver rather excitably at the feel of William's lips on his, of William's hand on his thigh, supporting his weight as he leaned in. He didn't deepen the kiss, until Vince brought up one hand to rest on his shoulder, mouth falling open not entirely of his own volition.

He'd tried, rather hard, not to want this.

"May I ask why?" Vince asked breathlessly a few minutes later. William was looking at him as though he was something amazing, eyes very slightly glazed over, for reasons that were readily apparent from a quick glance downward.

"Well, I was practically ordered to by my beloved," William said. "Though I can't deny that I wasn't unhappy with the command."

"I see," Vince said, though he wasn't entirely sure that he actually did. "And Rachel?"

"Told me to do anything I had to to look after you. Anything at all."

"She told me to let you," Vince said, understanding finally his wife's odd insistence on the phone. William looked at him expectantly, face flushed, hand lingering inches away from Vince's face. I want you, Vince thought, in a way that he'd never permitted himself to think it before. "So I suppose we'd better obey."

Thank you thank you thank you, Authoranon! Oh what a wonderful sequel to read first thing in the morning. I adore this pairing almost as much as Cablorne and Xanderborne (don't know why but I do). I've just watched Vince on Strictly and was clapping excitedly at him. I like Vince, liiiikesss him! (:

Vince hadn't expected fireworks. He was too old for fireworks, too grumpy and two battered by life for the earth to move. This. I can really hear Vince saying/thinking something like that.

I've always thought William's voice quite sexy actually, even more in recent years.

Vince + William's voice + anon's love of bald men = I'll be in my bunk.

This is so, so wonderful!

Cannot believe such a beautiful universe has evolved from the ridiculously vague prompt I made, thinking nobody would fill it.

This is definitely my canon for these two from now on (:

Thank you.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh I adore this so much. William's phonecall to Ffion has got to be one of the greatest things I've ever read, and I can totally imagine it in his voice (lese-majeste, oh my god William I <3 you and your wife).

And I basically melted at the whole second part.

Moar! Moar! :D
