For a start, the only person engaging him in conversation was the man who regularly sneered and mocked him over the Dispatch Box. The PM in fact looked happier to see him than his own Shadow Home Secretary.
Balls - who (of course!) was the one sporting a massive scarlet sweater, embellished with knitted pom-poms around the hem, and some kind of animal-life with a flashing red light doing duty for its nose ramping across his chest - was skulking inadequately in the shadows behind the punch bowl. When he spoke at all, it was to aim angry whispers towards Nick Clegg, whose LibDem-themed jumper was rendered elegant by muting its shade to Old-Gold.
“ …… rather trumped my ace with that woolly!”
“What?”
“It’s a stroke of rather wacky genius actually,” said the PM, magnificently ignoring Ed’s obvious lapse of attention, “the way you’ve adhered strictly to the dress-code, whilst simultaneously making a political statement.”
Ed had beamed before he remembered who he was speaking to.
“Shame it’s an outdated Marxist statement,” murmured the PM with a roguish twinkle, “But top marks for trying.”
Ed swelled indignantly.
“It’s a FILIAL statement!” he announced to the room at large, “And I would have thought, Prime Minister, that YOU of all people, might appreciate the power of memory at this … special … season of the year!”
There was a tense pause, broken by a low chuckle from the doorway.
“That’s almost unanswerable, David. Well done, Ed. Did the Ballster leave us any punch, I wonder?” Andy strolled forward, adding carelessly, “Oh - by the way. I found the Chancellor on the doorstep - in a rather fetching green number. Come in and display yourself, George!”
