There's Something Missing In the Ever After Glow- 3a/? anonymous December 5 2010, 15:54:44 UTC
David stared at his wife, paralysed with guilt. His wife. His wife and Nick's wife. Standing in front of them, staring down at the two of them cuddling in the bed.

"Oh, god. Sam, I'm so sorry! I- I cheated on you," David uttered, letting go of Nick so that he could go to his wife's feet and grovel.

Sam stopped him and told him to lay back down. The tone of her voice worried David, his mind was still a bit frazzled from the drug or whatever had effected them, and he was terrified he had just completely ruined his marriage.

"David," Sam said softly, trying to catch his attention after his mind had started to wander. He was beginning to notice how incredibly difficult it still was for him to concentrate on a single thing at a time. He could hear Nick starting to breathe hard and he was torn between worrying about Nick hyperventilating and his wife's reaction.

"So sorry..." David murmured and shook his head, burying his face in his hands.

"Dave, stop. I know you didn't mean to... I- it's an odd situation, please just sit back and relax," Sam whispered, not quite looking David in the eye.

"Nick," came another soft female voice, and David suddenly remembered that Miriam had come in as well. "Are you okay, querido?"

Nick sobbed again, the sounds wrenching at David's heart. He hated hearing others crying. "Oh, Miriam," Nick said weakly, "I'm such a bad husband..." he trailed off and wiped a tear from his eye, obviously too afraid to look at his wife. "I r-raped David and... and I cheated on you. Oh, Miriam..."

"Nick, stop it," David commanded quietly, reaching over, ignoring Nick's automatic recoil and finding his hand. He gripped his hand firmly, reassuringly. "I told you you did not rape me," David patted Nick on the shoulder comfortingly.

"No, David, I did," Nick said, trying to pull his hand out of David's. But David wouldn't let Nick go, instead he leaned over and kissed Nick's forehead softly, momentarily forgetting their wives were watching them.

"You didn't. I promise you that you didn't." David's voice was firm, but it worked to comfort Nick because he relaxed visibly.

"Nick," Miriam slowly approached the bed and sat down next to Nick, carefully running a hand through his hair. "Sam and I understand what happened, they explained to us what was poured on you. Would you like us to explain to you?"

Nick glanced over at David, as if asking him permission to say yes. David faltered, thrown off by the fact that Nick seemed to be relying on him. David nodded finally, squeezing Nick's hand under the sheets.

"Yes," Nick finally uttered.

Sam sighed and mirrored Miriam, sitting next to David and resting her hand on his shoulder. "They analysed the power that was thrown on the two of you," Sam began, and from the look on her face it was obvious she didn't know quite how to say what she had to say.

"They said it contained a potent mixture of an aphrodisiac, a stimulant, and a chemical that releases," Miriam paused, unsure of what the last one was.

"Pheromones," Sam supplied, "A chemical that mixes in your body and releases sex pheromones."

Nick stared at David for a second, and it almost terrified David that he couldn't read Nick's expression. Hearing what made them react as they did, David understood why Nick was looking like that. What had happened to them had such an emotional connotation to them, and the reason why being spelt out like that made him feel as if everything he was feeling at the moment wasn't quite... justified. There was a scientific, rational explanation for what happened, so why should he feel as if his whole world was thrown upside down?

"So," Nick finally broke the silence, "is that why we... why it had to be each other?"

"I don't know, querido," Miriam said, leaning forward to press a light kiss to Nick's forehead, but Nick drew back, his shoulder now resting on top of David's. Miriam frowned, but didn't say anything, knowing that he had just gone through an emotionally taxing ordeal. In fact, he was still going through an emotionally taxing ordeal.

Sam watched Nick's reaction to his wife trying to kiss him and thought better of trying to do something similar to David. The confused and lost expression on his face told her enough, that she should probably keep her distance until he was comfortable enough to initiate contact between them.

"It seems that way," David surprised Nick by answering. "I'm so sorry to put you through this," David said softly, turning to say the words directly into Nick's ear.

"Stop, not you too..." Nick trailed off. "I'm the one that... I- it wasn't..." Nick couldn't quite figure out how to say what he meant.

Sam stood suddenly, "Why don't you two stay and rest for a bit. They have everything taken care of and the doctor said the two of you looked fine when he checked on you whilst you slept. He said you should sleep for awhile. George and Vince are taking care of everything and told you not to worry about the country for a day."

Miriam nodded and followed Sam to the door, "You- you feel better." Miriam winced internally, but she wasn't sure what else to say.

Nick nodded and the two of them said quiet goodbyes as their wives shut the door behind them. Nick looked over at David, that unreadable expression on his face again. Suddenly, Nick leaned forward and pressed the lightest of kisses on David's forehead, "I know you insist that I didn't do anything wrong... but I'm sorry. Just... sorry that we even got forced in the situation to begin with. Sorry that you had to go through this pain and confusion and... just sorry for everything."

David stared over at Nick, lips parted in surprise. He wasn't expecting that. "Me too, Nick, me too," David said softly, reaching forward and dragging Nick to him. He kissed Nick, deeply and meaningfully, their tongues tangling around each other slowly, causing them both to whimper slightly. Despite being the one to initiate it, the kiss surprised David. He didn't know why his body wasn't reacting violently to this kind of contact with Nick. He would have thought that the last thing he would want to do is touch Nick, let alone kiss him. Finally, they pulled away and Nick simply rested his head on David's chest contently. They drifted off to sleep, trying to get their minds to just forget everything, at least for a few hours.
