His eyes darted across the room, seeking out Harry, his agent. As he pushed through the crowds, he noticed gazes lingering on him, but he studiously avoided eye contact, intent on making whatever acquaintance Harry thought useful and then getting out.
Twenty minutes later, he was still searching, and the combination of pounding music and hot, stifling air was giving him a headache.
“You look lost, hon,” said a woman’s voice from behind him.
He turned around to find a pretty brunette, probably late-thirties, flashing him a pleasant smile. She was wearing an alarmingly low-cut black dress, and Nick had to make the conscious effort to look her in the eye as he said, “Just looking for someone.”
“Oh?” There was a glint in her eyes, which were a startling shade of blue-green. “Anyone special?”
Nick gave a nervous laugh and raked a band through his hair. “No, not really. It’s, well, just my agent.”
Her eyes raked him up and down, and he could see the moment recognition dawned. “It’s Clegg, right?”
“Yes. Well, that is - it’s Nick, actually.”
“Very nice to meet you, Nick. I’m Ashley.” She raised one sculpted eyebrow and gestured with her head towards the bar set up along the far wall. “Would you like to get me a drink?”
Nick hesitated, his instincts telling him to get out of there as fast as he could. In an instant, he both recognised his desire to flee and slammed the door firmly shut upon it; he wasn’t going to get anywhere in his moving-on plan if he continued to live as a recluse, after all.
Decision made, he favoured Ashley with his most charming smile and offered her his arm.
