But he knows that there is nothing that he can do about it. He could announce it to the press, and destroy the greatest coalition government Britain has ever seen; destroy both his and Nick's lives and families; become addicted to drugs and have reporters camp outside his house in the manner of Boy George. Or he could keep his mouth shut because he is married and the Prime Minister, and because Clegg is also married and the Deputy Prime Minister and everything is just fine the way it is.
Cameron does not expect Clegg to come in when there's a knock on the door, and he says "Enter". But there he is, his tie loose and the first buttons of his shirt unbuttoned, and Cameron stifles that loud and unnecessary "I love you" from the back of his throat.
"I have some papers for you to sign," Clegg says, and their eyes meet, and just for a second Cameron can swear that he saw a flash of sadness in Clegg's eyes.
"What are they about?"
"I don't know, I haven't read them."
They speak quietly and quickly, as if they're afraid that there might be somebody who could overhear them, and Cameron chuckles to himself. There is so much he would like to say, but there aren't enough words, nor is there enough time. Five years seemed like an eternity in the beginning. Now it's just round the corner.
And he says, "Have you ever wanted something you can't have?"
Clegg smiles softly. "Of course. Is that not a part of life?"
"I suppose."
Cameron looks to the side, out of the window. He feels a certain heaviness on his heart, perhaps only temporary (even though a part of him knows that it'll be permanent). "It's a beautiful sunset," he says.
"Yes," Clegg replies. He takes a sharp breath, and the continues, "Listen, I've got to go, I have a meeting with- oh God I don't even remember but-"
"Stay," Cameron says suddenly, and Clegg looks up into Cameron's face. And he realises something, something that he doesn't quite realise yet, but he feels, he knows that it's important. So Clegg nods, and he stays, and together they watch the sky turn into shades of orange and violet.
