"Come on, Nick! Let's party!" David was already well past the legal limit for drinking and driving, which was why Nick had insisted they not bring a car at the beginning of the evening at all. He knew how David could get at these things. He would get so into being sociable and having fun with all of his friends that he would lose track of his drinking. Nick didn't mind so much, he just didn't want to leave it to chance that David might get any ideas and try to drive off home and wrap his car around a tree.
Nick had a pint in his hand, his second of the evening, and he was chuckling as David tried to pull him off his chair and get him to dance, "Why don't you go find some pretty woman to dance with?"
They had agreed that, if they weren't going to be public about their relationship, then in order to hide it without unwanted questions was for David to give the illusion that he was the same man he was before, which meant dancing with and flirting with women at parties.
David frowned and kept pulling Nick towards the middle of the room where people were dancing, barely letting Nick turn around to set his pint down on the bar, "But Nick, you are such a better dancer than them! I love watching you dance around on stage when you play..."
Nick glanced around quickly, but he realised that it was far too loud for anyone who wasn't right on top of them to hear what they were saying, even if they could see plain as day that David was dragging Nick to dance. Hopefully anyone who saw just thought it was Dave being playful and making a sulking Nick have a little fun. That would seem entirely credible compared with the public personae they had been given.
"Let's dance, please... I wanna dance wi- with you," David said, fumbling with his words a bit, and Nick realised just how drunk David was already.
"Okay," Nick snorted, smiling and letting David bob wildly around him.
Nick started to find a rhythm and began to move with David. He laughed, "You know, for someone with such a great musical talent and sense of rhythm, you dance like a dying bird."
"You're no better!" David responded, making his way behind Nick to grind up against Nick's arse.
Nick's eyes widened in shock that David would go this far in public, but he then realised that his scandalised expression probably looked very accurate for one friend who was randomly being humped on the dance floor by another friend. "Stop that!" Nick turned around, trying to be stern, but breaking into laughter when he turned to see David's arms above his head as he bobbed his head back and forth.
Nick never got a chance to make fun of David for that particular dance move, though, because a brunette woman with a great smile walked up to David and asked if he would like to dance with a prettier partner. David looked like he was going to refuse, saying Nick was pretty, when Nick caught his eye and gave him a warning look. Blinking a few times, David turned back to the woman and grinned, "Sure! What's your name?"
