Nick was very lost and about a second away from calling David himself and demanding to ask what was going on when someone banged on the bathroom door.
"Clegg? You alright in there? Hurry up!" One of the PCs said loudly.
"O- okay, just a second. I am finishing up here!" Nick quickly said, still using the browser to look for more news stories on the subject of his and David's imaginary affair.
The Telegraph and Guardian both had liveblogs of the event, along with various sources publishing a transcript of David's statement to the House. Nick also stumbled upon a quick clip of the moment David stated that they were having an affair.
Nick locked his phone and shoved it back in his pocket. Now he knew why David was arranging he go straight back to Downing Street.
When Nick stepped out of the bathroom and into the lobby of the police station, Nick was greeted by Dan, one of David's personal security team members, who led him to the back of the building and then sneaked him into a car with dark tinted windows.
As the car rode down the street to Westminster, Nick pulled out his phone again to text Miriam.
Must go to No. 10 first. Be home asap. Love you. Talk when I know what's going on.
The car turned a corner, Nick ducked down in the back as he glanced out, and he could see they were getting close to Downing Street. His mobile vibrated in his hand and he was distressed to see that Miriam's message was a short, Taking kids out of London. Too much attention.
Nick didn't have time to contemplate what that meant because they were pulling into the back of Downing Street and Nick was being ushered into the building, straight to David's office.
The doors closed and Nick was left inside with David, alone.
"What the heck is going on here, David? Why would you make a statement saying we're having an affair?" Nick demanded, distraught.
David looked like he might be closed to tears, actually, "I didn't mean to; it just slipped out! I was just trying to give you an alibi so they would actually pursue someone else for the murder and they kept pressuring me and I- I- I just... said it!"
Nick ran a hand through his hair in distress, "Shoot." He realised something and looked up at David, panic in his eyes, "We can't even take this back, can we? We'll have to go along with it otherwise I'll be back in jail and you'll be in the cell with me."
"Shit," David whimpered, collapsing back onto the sofa.
