"Turn around, Clegg," The police constable ordered, and Nick did as he was told. He was very confused as to why he was being released from the cuffs that he had been in every time he was out of the holding cell he'd been in for the past day. Perhaps, he thought, this meant that Miriam had bailed him out.
"What's happening?" Nick couldn't keep quiet; he had to find out what was going on.
The cuffs were off and the PC patted Nick on the shoulder, letting him know it was okay to turn around again, and told him, "Charges have been dropped. Something about evidence only being circumstantial and you havin' an alibi."
Nick frowned. He didn't know what alibi that was, but he was confident that he hadn't done the crime he'd been accused of, so he kept quiet and counted his blessings.
"Here, get dressed and here are the things you were brought in with," The PC handed him a large plastic bag and pointed towards the bathroom where he could change back into his real clothes.
Nick quickly got dressed, fumbling with his effects and pulling out his mobile. As he tried to turn it on, he hoped it would have battery left so that he could call someone. Outside of the station, if anyone at all had got word of his release, he knew there would be a frenzy of media and he did not want to walk out into it unprepared.
The phone came on with about a quarter of the battery left. It wasn't ideal, but it was more than enough to make a few calls. But before he could open up the dial pad, dozens of notifications for missed calls and text messages flooded the screen. Nick waited for all of them to arrive and then blinked in shock when he saw that most of the text messages were from David and were giving him instructions for that exact moment.
Sending Dan and a car to come and pick you up. Be discreet and you'll come in the back of Downing Street. We'll have things to discuss immediately.
Nick frowned at the message. He was just getting out of jail, why on earth was David demanding he go back to work? Surely David would realise he'd want to go home and see his family? Wouldn't he?
Suddenly, Nick had an idea. He opened the browser on his mobile and went to the BBC news site.
"Oh shit," Nick swore aloud as he read the large breaking news headline in the middle.
Cameron admits affair with Clegg for Clegg's release.
"You did what?" Nick quietly asked aloud. Fumbling with the phone, he quickly went to click on the story and read it through. He whimpered as he read the quote from David, announcing in the House of Commons that they were physically intimate. Was David insane? It wasn't true, so why was David saying something like that?
