[2/012][Voices]

[Presea sits in the corridor, axe on her lap and rag in hand, and listens to her own voice. But the voice is different. Her voice, from before, when her physical age matched her mental, before everyone had died and left her. The frightened, ever so emotional voice of a child.]

It's okay... I will continue with Papa's job. I've been helping him all ( Read more... )

[the snatch of conversation on Presea's end is something he's no stranger of, having heard similar one many time before.]

Words from the past can never hurt us. Keep on ignoring them, Presea!

"And besides, that was several lifetimes ago. A lot of time has flowed underneath the bridge since all that happened to me." [adds the sombre voice of his eighth self.]

Your voice, it's different.

Well, I was a different man back then...

I--well--yes. I was. It's...rather complicated, but suffice it to say, it's like a prevention system for my race.

You criticize and attack people for their birth and upbringing- things
they cannot change. It is you who are not human.

Oh. Okay.

[if she only knew how close to the truth she is...]

"Let's talk about Time Lords. We're a strange bunch when you shake it all down. And I can understand how we come across as pompous or arrogant, but you see, we take our responsibilities very seriously."

Well, I suppose I could explain it a little better than that. If you want, that is.

If you don't mind talking about it.

[he smiles] No, of course not. It's--[but before he has a chance to explain, his own voice chimes in, offering Presea the explanation he'd given Lara many months ago.]

"Basically, it's a biological process my body undergoes when it's weakened or injured to the point where I'm, well, dying. Regenerative energy pumps through every last cell in my body and in the process changes it. The effects aren't localized to my body either. A different side of me subtly comes out a little stronger than the rest of my personality, each time it happens. And I'm on my tenth regenerative cycle now. Ollie remembers me best with dark, curly hair, big teeth, bright blue eyes, and quite unpredictable.

But I won't lie, it hurts every time it happens. Organs have to realign to the size and structure of my new body, and mentally... It's like being put through a large strainer--never know what kind of man I'll be when it's done."

[he blinks and laughs.] Well, what I said!

Do you lose memories?

There's a bit of an amnesia period while all the newly regenerated cells are still firing off energy and, well, I'm not always sure of who I am right then. Bit of an identity crisis but I always figure it out in the end.

Though, that isn't to say I haven't lost memories before because I have.

That sounds scary.

...It is. You don't know what's going to happen, if the regenerative process will fail, if something will interfere, etcetera.

I think... I would rather die as myself. If I had a choice like that.

Really? Even if changing your appearance and tweaking your personality would allow you to continue exploring and discovering new things?

Would it be me? Or... Someone else, with the same name?
