The Almighty Johnsons

I would never have thought to check this show out if
vaznetti hadn't mentioned it when it started airing on Syfy (ugh, however many years later, I *still* hate spelling it that way). It's quite a lot of fun.

The premise of the show is that back in the 19th century, the Norse gods were feeling pretty sulky about all the Christianity in Norway, so they emigrated en masse to New Zealand. They've been slowly fading away there, having greatly reduced powers and living almost mortal lifespans. When they die, they are eventually reborn as a descendent of the original immigrants, but they don't gain their powers or learn their godly identities until they turn 21. The show follows the four Johnson brothers, the youngest of whom has just discovered he's Odin.

I've only seen 8 episodes so far, and the show is mostly racy comedy (I'm assuming the dick pun in the title is intentional, because it certainly fits) with a side order of soapy drama. But along the way the show is also questioning various versions of masculinity and exploring power and gender relations.

With lots of beer and nudity.

It's fun!
