The kids had a snow day today (actually an ice day). We baked and decorated cut-out cookies (most of which will go to Squeaky's party at preschool tomorrow) and watched the Bolshoi Ballet's 1989 production of The Nutcracker.
Apparently, every year Ovation does a Battle of the Nutcrackers. Why have I never heard of this before?! Ovation needs to buy more commercials on other channels! I see on their website that Mark Morris's "The Hard Nut" has won for three years running -- so they're not airing it this year. It was originally broadcast on PBS back when I didn't even own a TV, so I have never seen it. But this year's line-up does include Maurice Bejart's Nutcracker (a ballet about his own life, set to the Nutcracker score), and so far it is absolutely stunning. I'm only halfway through the first act, and I'm not letting myself watch more until I make substantial progress on my Yuletide story.
In other news, a real-life friend of mine has just joined Dreamwidth: her name is
dandelion_salad and she's a musician and former voice teacher who is now writing historical fiction and interested in discussing it with like-minded folks. I've been pointing her in the direction of some of you who have similar interests, so if a mysterious stranger turns up in your comments, now you know!
