Just out of curiosity, anyone else not been getting comment notifications for the past 24 hours?

In other news, Chuckles proves once again that she is my child. We had a parent-teacher conference on Thursday, and the teacher is showing me all these assessments with 100% on them, one after another, and then we get to the reading assessment, and it's 90%. Bzuh? And the teacher said, "I'm so sorry, but the kids have to read the story out loud *exactly* as written, and she put in a few extra words to make the sentence transitions smoother, so I had to mark her down."

Yes, my daughter was editing the reading assignment to make it flow better *g*. Example: "Sentence X. Sentence Y!" became "Sentence X, but now Sentence Y!" I'm so happy! Because think of the level of comprehension you need to make edits like that on the fly, as you read out loud: as you're speaking Sentence X aloud, you're already scanning ahead to Sentence Y, and you understand it and how it relates to X quickly enough that you can stick in a nice connection before you speak Y aloud.

I used to do literacy tutoring for teens and adults with reading problems, so I know that it's those higher-level skills that are really necessary for a love of leisure reading. When you're stuck reading each word separately, it's so hard to feel the flow of the narrative. It's nice to see those skills developing.
