hey, no wonder I feel like crap!

I have pneumonia! In all likelihood, I've had it for three weeks, since the doctor suspects it is one of the slow-developing, atypical types. Andy has all the same symptoms, too, only worse, so he's headed off to the doctor now.

Fun times, fun times.

My mom just had pneumonia, ack. And ten years ago when I had it, I was so convinced I would feel even worse if it were true, I looked at the doctor after his five-second diagnosis and said, "...are you sure?"

I hope you and yours start feeling better soon.

Ugh. :-( That kind of stuff, or severe bronchitis at least, was a yearly part of my life living in Southern Illinois with crappy insurance. Hope you guys are able to get well soon.

I have never encountered contagious pneumonia before. Andy had typical pneumonia about a decade ago, and it was the sort of thing where he had a cold, and then when his resistance was low there was an unlikely chance encounter with staph or strep or something and he ended up flat on his back with exhaustion, coughing up blood. So that was our model of pneumonia.

But apparently with Mycoplasma pneumoniae and some of the other atypical bacteria, the initial infection is with the bacterium itself and it just mimics a cold for a while until it gets worse and worse and worse, but it rarely results in complete collapse (or big gouts of blood) the way that typical pneumonia does. At least one other person at COGS has been diagnosed with this right now, so I guess it is making the rounds of C'dale.

It may not be overtly life-threatening, but it is not pleasant.

Yeah. I'm not sure how it relates to what I got frequently back in IL, but I routinely got sinus infections that led to full-on bronchitis, almost always once a year. I would go and pass on milder versions of that to everyone around me, but something about my constitution makes me really suffer a lot from that, so I would actually have severe bronchitis.

Which meant the doctor would put me on high doses of ephedrine, to the point that I can't take regular, OTC decongestants anymore. They just make me feel like a junkie, all jittery and gross.

Hopefully when we move back to IL we'll be able to afford gold-plated insurance to keep me on preventative stuff during the winter!
