thank goodness I don't have to be rational

I had the luxury of not having to reach a fully formed judgment about Obama vs. Clinton. I live in Illinois -- it was pretty clear which way my state was going to go, so I didn't even vote in the primary. I really don't know which way I would have voted: both candidates hold many views that I agree with, and some that I don't. I think they're both quite competent. I think they both have some very strong arguments in favor of their electability and some very strong arguments against. On a symbolic level, I'd be equally happy with either the color or the gender barrier being broken. I was equally disgusted by both the blatant misogyny and the blatant white privilege on display in the public discourse on the primary.

So now that we finally have a de facto nominee, I can publicly indulge my celebrity crush on Obama without worrying about what it might seem to imply regarding Clinton as a person or as a candidate. Expect lots of Obama icon usage in the upcoming months; if this is a total nails-on-chalkboard issue for anyone on my flist, let me know and I'll try to at least spare the comments in your journal.

Many thanks to sophia_helix for letting me know about obama_daily: some truly outstanding and inspiring Obama photos, brought right to your flist every day!
