I think the "Go on, hit me!" is taking the subtext too far, because it's an apology for having hit Sam earlier. Otherwise, I do not quibble with your subtext despite more-or-less liking what they did with Gordon.

I will clean it up a bit and then take your dare. I suppose it's my turn to take one for the team?

Sadly, I didn't manage to write up my SPN and race post in time for Columbus Day.

I was really surprised by the lack of forethought in this regard, as well. If so many of us saw it, why didn't they change the script (or seem to care at all?)

I thought that same thing. Like Jubal Early in Firefly, with Lenore as River. How can it get by a whole team of people putting a show together? Also, they totally ripped off Gunn with the whole sister thing. A lot of Joss in this episode, it seems!

You know, I never caught on to that in Firefly -- I think it was the combination of a different cultural setting, plus the fact that Jubal and River are both so *odd*, it just didn't ping my stereotype detector in the same way.

I didn't really, either, until Serenity, and then we get another cold, heartless black guy after River. It was then that it pinged big time.
