BACKGROUND:
Starting from the beginning, Ranka has never had a normal life. Her mother was a well renowned scientist and her father, unsurprisingly never entered the picture. Her early childhood years were spent in an underwater research lab where she lived a surprisingly happy childhood. When she was about five years old an incident happened (leaving this purposefully vague because as unlikely as it is cast mates could happen) Ranka was one of a handful of survivors; however, she came out of the incident with dissociative amnesia so doesn't remember her earlier years. She was taken in by a man named Ozma Lee who'd been a guard station at the lab.
She's lived happily in California with her older brother for the eleven years living life relatively well. Then an incident happened at a small local mall, apparently Ranka had been entered into the contest. All seemed well until Ranka's performance, she hadn't mean to do it she'd just been so very nervous! It wasn't a well known fact that she'd managed to musically change the emotions of the listeners, but a power sensitive person in the audience had recognized her ability. Terrified, she talks a loyal friend into letting her test to see if it were true or not. When it does turn out to be true she heads home to tell her brother just what had happened. The decision to go to the Institute was a hard one for the young teen and so reluctantly she was on her way to a new place without the older brother who meant everything to her in the world.
PERSONALITY: Ranka's a bright, energetic teenage girl who's a little on the naive side. She's easy going, often rather cheerful, and has a very tactile nature. On a less positive note, Ranka clearly has some issues. She's always struggling with her self-image and she's not in the least bit confident in her own abilities. It isn't until people gently prompt her along that Ranka really starts to grow and develop on her own. So Ranka's self-worth is a little fragile, she just hasn't learned to believe in herself yet.
That doesn't mean she's a pushover mind you, Ranka has a latent stubborn streak that pops out at some of the most inconvenient times. It's also clear that she's got quite the temper as well, seen from the argument she got into with her brother. So don't judge Ranka as an being a little girl who'll take anything lying down, she happens to be a quarter Zentradi after all. A crash course in Zentradi? They're an alien race known for being huge, tough, and temperamental. You could even say they live to fight. While Ranka has inherited most of these features on a much smaller scale, they still do exist in her personality, she's just much more laid back than her full blooded ancestry.
APPEARANCE: Ranka's a very short girl, at about five foot one she's woefully underdeveloped. It's not uncommon for her to be mistaken for a girl three to five years younger than she actually is. Despite this should look fairly normal if it weren't for a few key details. The fact that her hair is a bright kelly green being one of them and her eyes are also a peculiar shade of crimson being the other. Both can be traced back to her Zentradi heritage as it's not uncommon for them to have coloring that is not normal for your average human. Also as an interesting note, it's this Zentradi blood that gives Ranka's hair the ability to move on it's own in accordance to her emotions. (She's also got an above average resistance to the vacuum of space but that shouldn't come into play considering.)
POWERS: Ranka's ability is empathy. Typically it is triggered when she sings and during this time it becomes possible for her to influence the actions and behaviors of anyone in earshot. Currently all she can really do is trigger mood swings so you have nothing to fear from her in that sense anytime soon. She also experiences a little bit of a more typical empathy, that is if she's feeling exceptionally vulnerable the feelings of others will slowly bleed into her conscious, much without her realizing it. While her power has the potential to be used in some rather painfully ways (Causing people to feel pain and the like);however, she's not the sort to abuse her powers in such a way even if she knew how to do so. Instead she's more concerned with the potential application of how to take that pain away.
ANYTHING ELSE?: Zentradi love music and Ranka is no different, singing and music have been all she's wanted to do in her life since she was very little. There's one particular song that happens to be the only memory she has of her mother and you'll often hear her humming it to herself.
