[Background]
Gwendolen, one of main characters and sister of the character whose POV the story is told, is the cause of many of the problems in the story and turns out to be one of the main antagonists in the first volume of the series. In a world set in the Edwardian era and magical is a perfectly everyday thing, Coming from a family of strong magical abilities, Gwendolen was a highly gifted young witch, though in reality she had been secretly leeching much of her powers from her loyal little brother Cat since childhood, who is unknowingly a nine lived enchanter.
After recently orphaned in a boating accident, she and Cat lived with their old neighbor for about a year, pampered by the townspeople, and Gwendolen received magic lessons from the local necromancer Mr. Nostrum. After some time he eventually involved her and unknowingly Cat in a plot to take over the world, which Gwendolen gladly accepted. Eventually they were sent to live with Chrestomanci, the most powerful known enchanter and a very powerful figure. Gwendolen was eager to use this as a step towards her success, but to her rage they didn't seem to think much about her and her abilities and treated her like an ordinary child. She began to pull magical pranks to get attention, including shoving a forest against the castle and turning a maid into a frog, but to no avail, and she became increasingly more angry and overzealous, the nastier side of her personality coming out. Eventually she managed to get her hands on illegal magical supplies including dragon blood, which she used to pull off her biggest stunt yet, summoning a bunch of grisly apparitions to disrupt a dinner party, which resulted in getting most her magic taken away.
That night she used another one of her brother's lives to escape to one of the parallel worlds, knowing she'd be better off there, and stranding an alternate self named Janet in her place. To her delight, She finally did find herself ruling a world as queen. After a few days and some of her powers regenerated she returned to her own world to finalize Mr. Norstrum's plans, including willingly sacrificing her little brother at a magical crossroad between worlds known as the Archway. Cat finally learned the truth about his powers and pulled them back from Gwendolen. After a big battle Gwendolen was defeated. Realizing she had been beaten and her plans through, instead of surrendering she used the last of her powers to seal herself back in her new world.

[Personality] At first glance, Gwendolen is a cute, talented, pretty, confident young British girl. However, she is highly ambitious, brash and selfish. She tends to expect people to acknowledge her talents and to get her way, fueled by all the attention she received growing up and being said that she's destined for power. She can be prone to tantrums and holding grudges to those she who she finds wrong her, even when they just disagree with her sometimes. She can by quite sly and manipulative, whether by charm or blackmail, using others to suit her own needs, especially her younger brother Cat, who really looks up to her. Her behavior towards Cat alternates between a motherly big sister to harshly bossing him around. She actually doesn't seem to care much for him, not even minding at all about sacrificing him at the Archway. However deep inside she knows she needs him, not just because he's a source of her power, but because she really does love him.
Despite her bratty nature, Gwendolen can hold the image of a sweet charming girl well when needed. When meeting new people, she usually acts coolly polite, her level of arrogance depending on how worthy she expects them to be and how important they would be to her. She can actually often be quite lovely and ladylike, when in a good mood. She is always looking to improve her skills and insists on being taught the higher advanced levels of magic, feeling that she's passed the standard level. She's quite tidy and in fact a fairly good strategist, though in her brashness tends to let some of her plans and secrets slip.
She is one of the kind of people who is planning to rule the world soon, and will stop at nothing to get her way, no matter the scheme. But when it comes down to it, she is just silly, spoiled, young girl whose overconfidence leads her to problems and villainous decisions.

[Abilities] As a witch, she has a variety of magical abilities, including summoning, transfiguration, elemental skills and energy blasts. Some spells simply require concentration, some involve saying words, and some involve complete rituals. She can also fly on a broom, and can't
drown. Some magic users have certain special abilities, and Gwendolen's seems to be leeching magical powers from certain people and things to use herself. She can also sense magical energies.

[Sample post]
[First Person] Excuse me! I demand that you treat me better than dropping me off in this lousy place without reason! In fact, I don't think I was meant to be on that here! What is the meaning of this?! This is all their doing!!

This is not good! Why can't I get out of here! Grr, this is going to mess up all of my plans!!

[Third Person] Gwendolen sat by her window, gazing out over the kingdom with a triumphant smile on her face. She had finally done it. She had known for years that she was meant for a high power such as this, and now she was on top, ruling her own kingdom with an iron fist. It had been easy enough to replace whatever other self was here before, whatever happened to her, she didn’t care. The people there figured she had memory loss and she had all the information about this world filled in for her. She didn’t worry about her replacement back home. As she was her, she was bound to cleverly figure it all out.

Shame her planned success didn’t work out back in the other world. She was moving up from her dingy little neighborhood where she was highly regarded, but those fools at Chrestomanci Castle dared not to acknowledge her talents, especially that wretched Chrestomanci. Well, she would get him soon. As for her dear little brother Cat, perhaps she would regret sacrificing him a bit. But it had to be done, and he was a weakling anyways, and he dared pick them over her. Besides, this other possible Cat here was much more useful, even though he supposedly didn’t have another self. Ironic that he was both her brother and servant in this world. As he served her tea, she listened with disinterest as the minister read out her schedule, taking notice only of the advanced magic course she was promised and the festival the next day.
