Twi-hype: My take on the Twilight movie

Mar 23, 2009 23:59

Just finished watching Twilight...and egads it's bad.

As I've said before the books were mostly entertaining and nothing more--although some were incredibly infuriating. I think of them like sleazy romance novels [the kind you get at the supermarket for under $4] and nothing more.

But the movie...oh the movie was bad. Worse than the book even.

Why?

Bad special effects. Some odd casting choices. Terrible dialogue. Some alterations to the original story that made the story make less sense or turn what could be half decent moments into terrible ones.

A lot of unexplainable moments.

And I actually think the horribleness of the film made Bella's obsessive "I can't live without you" mindset (one of the many things I disliked about the books) seem even more crazy.

Oh...and the sparkling. I will never get over the sparkling! And when Edward laments over being such a horrible sparkling monster--OH DEAR LORD. I couldn't contain the laughter.

Let's review that moment:

:: action ::

Edward: Oh wah wah! I'm such a horrible monster. Just see what I look like in this sunlight.
(his face sparkles in the sunlight)
Edward: Don't look at me! I'm hideous.
(sparkle sparkle)
Bella: No. You're beautiful.
Edward: No. I'm a horrible monster.
(sparkle sparkle sparkle) Gah! (he runs off to hide in the darkness)

:: and scene ::

Um...yeah...I'm sorry Stephanie Meyer (and whoever wrote the screenplay) but if you want a dramatic scene where someone laments being a "horrible monster" then it will probably help if they don't sparkle in the sunlight.

Vampires shouldn't sparkle. They can be conflicted about killing (ala Rice), retain their humanity and even be moody but for heavens sake don't make them do something fairies and unicorns might do.

Goodnight!
