So there were a lot of excellent comments on the first edition of this post (both the
LJ version and the
DW version) but then they made me think about what I left out, so here's some (
more stuff that would surprise Captain America when he got woken up after 70 years frozen in ice: )
I sort of just posted a rant on why Thor is not as dumb (and Steve is not as confused) as they are often written as being, and was linked to you in turn.
I think people enjoy writing about culture (time?) clash, and all the humor therein, but the constant inaccuracies do get frustrating. Again, you're brilliant, and thank you. :'D
The Howling Commandos - I know the idea of them being an integrated unit came from a later comic, but I quite like the idea that Steve knew just how unusual his team was (rather than it being a moviemaker mistake), and liked them that way. It seems that when he broke them out, they were a mix of a dozen different defeated divisions, and so their diversity in the HYDRA prison makes a bit more sense. He also had a Brit and a French guy in the unit - and a Japanese-American, who I feel would have been getting even more shit than the black guy depending on who he would have had the misfortune to be stuck with.
So he might not be that surprised by Nick Fury because of the HC, and Pepper Potts because of women like Peggy. Not because those things were normal in his time, but because when he encountered them, he accepted them with little to no reaction.
TL;DR he might be surprised, but happily so.
