Today I walked into Maplebrook prepared to sub for 1st graders. The secretary, Sue, told me there was a mix up on the day and I wasn't needed, but there was a sub that hadn't showed yet so she asked me to wait. Subs are supposed to show up at 8:00 cause school starts 8:15. By 8:10 Sue called HR and found that this sub notoriously shows up late so she asked if they could just put me in for the day and if/when the other sub showed, tell her to go home.
It was an assignment for music so I went and found that I didn't have any kids coming until 8:50 so I went back to the office. Just as I got there the other sub showed up and looked a mess. The assistant principal pulled her aside into her office. A moment later, you could hear the sub yelling at the asst. principal telling her 'how dare you send me home!' Sue told me that she was going to put that sub on the 'do not call' list and put me on the 'preferred sub list'.
It's like my rowing coach always told us: "ALWAYS show up for practice because the one day you're missing could be the day the boat goes faster." The sub didn't show up on time and now she's going to be missing out on assignments for a whole building.
ps. The best part of the day was when a kindergartener asked me what a waltz was (we were watching fantasia's nutcracker suite). I told her it was a dance and she asked me to show her how so I did. When the rest of the class saw what we were doing, they all paired up and started dancing around the room. Nauseously adorable!
