Author’s Note: In the past few weeks, I had one friend lose her husband of seventeen years to cancer, leaving a wife and two boys, ages eight and five, behind, and one former co-worker discovering that his ten-year old's six-year bout with cancer was not, ultimately, going to be won.

This is dedicated to them.

“We’ve had a good run, haven’t we, Harry?” Draco asked as he eased his body down on to the sofa. There were good days and bad days. Today he was tired, bone-weary; he had been for weeks.

“Don’t start talking like that, Draco. These aren’t the only healers in the world,” Harry said as he went into the kitchen to start the kettle. “We haven’t even begun to look into how they’re incorporating Muggle and Wizard medicines together in the Americas or Asia. There are all kinds of potions, spells, and medicines that we haven’t discovered. Let’s start contacting some of these people and see what they have to tell us,” Harry said as he came back into the living room and sat on the couch next to his husband. He wrapped his arm protectively around the fragile, thinning man as he gave him a cup of tea.

He knew what Draco was saying, was wanting to say. Their last visit with world-renowned healers had brought little hope. They talked about failed treatments, and end of life procedures. It was a blow to both men as they sat there and listened. Finally, they thanked the healers, and decided to return home to think about everything that was said and unsaid.

“I know, Harry, I know. We could spend the next few months searching all over the world. There are plenty of people out there, both Wizard and Muggle alike who think that they might be able to solve what’s wrong with me. But sometimes, money, means, and even the will to survive are not enough.

“But that doesn’t mean I want to lay down in my death bed right now!” Draco added hastily at the look of shock, fear, and concern in those beautiful green eyes. Eyes that he found he could stare into for the rest of his life and never grow tired of it. Eyes that were now brimming with tears as Harry realized what he was saying and what he wanted.

“Instead of spending these next few months traveling all over the world trying to find a cure for me, let’s think about just spending time together enjoying the time that we have now. Let’s let the problems of tomorrow come then, and not worry about them now. Let’s just be together, just you and I - visiting family, playing with our grandchildren and great-grandchildren, making love, and growing old together… just like we promised each other when we got married.

“If my final days have truly come, I could not imagine spending them with anyone else. Please, Harry, please?” Draco pleaded. He knew that right now, he had to be strong, to be brave, so that Harry could fall apart. In the days to come, he’d be the weaker partner, and Harry would have to be strong for the both of them.

“OK, Draco. If that’s what you want,” Harry whispered as he wrapped both arms around Draco, careful not to crush him. They sat in silent, lost in their own thoughts.

After a few awhile, Harry sat up straighter again, drawing Draco to lean on him. He pulled his shoulders back, his face was guarded, but kind.

“You know, I don’t think we could call it a good run when we have one more leg together, do you? You’re right, though. Let’s make the most of the time we have, but let’s start tomorrow with the family and friends, all right? Tonight, I just want to spend it with you,” Harry said as he leaned in to give Draco a gentle kiss on the lips.
