Summary: While on a camping trip with her best friends, Ryeowook stumbles upon an interesting girl in the woods.
Author's Note: I was attempting to write one of my other story ideas that have Jongwoon and Ryeowook as boys . . . my muse wasn't having that. Oh well, I'm actually quiet fond of this story, so I hope you enjoy! :)
“Don't go too far, Ryeowook-ah, a city girl like you will get lost in the woods before you realize it!” a small girl sang, mocking the advice given by one of her best friends. If they were so worried about her getting lost in the woods, they wouldn't have let her go alone.
Ryeowook hmphed, picking up another branch that looked like good burning material. She had been walking around for over half an hour at this point, her arms now full of decaying trees while her other three friends were busy setting up camp. Well, Donghae was probably the only one setting up camp, Sungmin and Kyuhyun were most likely eye-fucking each other after having finally gotten together a few weeks ago. If Ryeowook was being honest, she found their antics to be ten percent adorable and ninety percent sickening. But she wasn't going to let the two lovebirds upset her time on this trip.
An entire camping trip which had been orchestrated by Donghae, who had wanted to have a final bonding experience before they went off to college in the fall, the four having just graduated high school. When she had explained the idea, the other two and Ryeowook had been hesitant, particularly with their nonexistent camping experience. But Donghae was persistent, finalizing plans as soon as the three had caved in, finding tents the girls could borrow as well as a car to drive them to the camping site.
Lost in thought, Ryeowook cursed when she stumbled over a tree root, some of the branches falling out of her grasp. “What the hell! Since when to roots stick so far out of the ground,” she grumbled while picking up the fallen objects. It was time to head back, she decided, annoyed by how she struggled to hold onto everything.
Except, when she turned around to storm back to camp, she discovered that she had wondered off the path she was following. Not recognizing what was around her, Ryeowook swore.
“Okay, Ryeowook. Deep breath, I'm not lost yet,” she bit her bottom lip, worrying the flesh as she observed the land around her. Even though she had her cell phone on her, she didn't want to call and alarm her friends. It wasn't like she was going to be able to give them directions to her location anyway, otherwise she wouldn't be lost.
She had been walking in a rather straight line from what she could remember, which meant that if she walked in a straight line back she should run into the path. Better yet, she could run into the camp site.
Forty minutes later, Ryeowook came to the conclusion that she clearly hadn't been walking in a straight line. She was still lost, probably even more so now that she had been walking in the wrong direction for almost an hour. The small girl was about to give in and call her friends when she heard something off to her right, something that sounded like someone singing.
Intrigued, she followed the sound, unsuccessfully trying to be quiet over dead leaves carpeting the ground. Approaching what appeared to be a large ray of sunlight, maybe even an opening, Ryeowook made it to the surrounding trees when the singing abruptly stopped.
“Whose there?” someone called out, distinctly female. Ryeowook thought it was probably the same voice as the one that belonged to the person who had been singing.
Carefully placing the branches on the ground, in a neat pile that could be easily picked up again, Ryeowook poked her head around the trees. In the clearing before her, was a young looking woman, sitting comfortably on top of a blanket.
The female had dark brown hair, which almost appeared black, that fell to her shoulders in carefully styled layers. Dark eyes were staring intently at Ryeowook, surrounded by a thin line of eyeliner and no other visible make up. She wore a white sun dress, hemmed with decorative midnight blue threads as well as a matching bow wrapped around her waist. Her lips, which had been tilted in a frown, upturned when Ryeowook stepped fully out in the open. Overall, she was very stunning, and the small girl couldn't stop her cheeks from turning red.
“Um, hi?” Ryeowook hesitantly called out.
“Hello yourself,” the beautiful woman called back. “You know you're on private property, right?”
“Oh! I'm sorry, I didn't know,” Ryeowook exclaimed, tugging nervously on one of her pigtails. She rambled on, “You see, I'm camping with some friends and I got lost while collecting firewood. I tried finding my way back, but-”
Head tilted back with laughter, the dark haired woman waved Ryeowook over, the skin around her eyes crinkled. “Don't worry, I'm not upset,” she explained while gesturing for the smaller to take a seat next to her. “I think I know where your friends are, seeing as there is only one campsite nearby, unless you've been missing for more than a day?”
“No, only for a couple of hours. My name's Ryeowook, by the way,” she blurted.
“Nice to meet you, Ryeowook. I'm Jongwoon,” the other glanced at her watch, “It's only 2:30, if you want, I can guide you back to your campsite? It's early enough to deliver you back to your friends and return here before dark.”
Ryeowook practically fell forward, leaning over to gush, “Thank you, Unnie! I would really appreciate that! I wasn't sure how I was going to find my way back-”
She was cut off again, this time by her cell blaring from her pocket. It was Donghae.
“Ryeowook-ah! Where are you? You've been gone for almost two hours now, you didn't get lost did you?”
“Um, maybe? But don't worry, Donghae-unnie, I found someone whose going to help me out.”
“What do you mean found someone?! Did you run into a stranger while collecting firewood? You know you're suppose to runaway from strangers, Ryeowook-ah, especially ones you meet in the woods!” Donghae's upset voice traveled through the phone.
“But Jongwoon-unnie is really nice, she was just sitting in a clearing. I don't think she's dangerous,” Ryeowook mumbled, embarrassed to be saying that where the other could hear. Jongwoon was clearly eavesdropping on the phone conversation, smiling in amusement.
“Ryeowook, you are a prime victim to be kidnapped or be subjected to some other kinds of gruesome unmentionable acts. You're small, pretty, and look like you would break in half if you were hit by a finger. Where is you sense of self-preservation?”
“Unnie!” Ryeowook exclaimed, cheeks flushed in mortification.
Donghae ignored her interruption, continuing on her rant, “What was I thinking sending you out by yourself. I clearly should have sent Sungmin-unnie to protect your virtue, at least she's skilled in martial arts.”
Jongwoon looked like she was fighting the urge to fall over with laughter, hand pressed over her mouth to muffle any sound that tried to pass. When she calmed down enough to talk, she grabbed Ryeowook's cell phone right out of the girl's hand, and interrupted Donghae's tirade.
“Donghae-sshi? This is Jongwoon, don't worry about poor Ryeowook here. I'll get her back to you safe and sound, virtue intact. It'll take us a little under an hour to make it to the campsite, so give us an hour and a half before calling in a search party. See you then!” Jongwoon hung up the phone.
Gawking, Ryeowook watched as Jongwoon kept her phone, typing away on the keys without offering an explanation.
“We better get going, I don't want to panic your friends anymore than they already are.”
“Oh, um. . .okay.”
The two set off back into the woods, Jongwoon leading the way as she occasionally let Ryeowook hang off of her arm to keep from tripping on the forest floor. While whey trudged their way back, the two continued to talk, learning more about each other. As it turns out, the clearing Ryeowook had stumbled upon was a part of the land owned by Jongwoon's family, and the older female often visited it when needing time for herself. Jongwoon came from an affluent family, her father a high profile politician and her mother a professor at the college Ryeowook would be attending in the fall. When Ryeowook heard that, she chocked in surprise, staring at the beautiful female with wide eyes.
Ryeowook herself came from a family that seemed to struggle to make ends meet, scraping by with each pay her parents earned. Every now and then they would have to make the hard decision of skipping a meal; and presents for birthdays and the holidays were always small, but the small girl would never complain about her situation. What her family lacked in money, they more then made up for it in love, and Ryeowook knew her parents would be happy with any decision she made. Even if the older girl didn't say anything, Ryeowook got the feeling that the relationships in Jongwoon's family was much more strained.
The two were so caught up in conversation, that they didn't realize they had made it back to the campsite, until Donghae practically sobbed out, “Ryeowook-ah!”
The taller girl ran forward, crushing Ryeowook to her chest in an embrace that made breathing difficult. Her time on the soccer field and in dance meant Donghae was deceivingly strong for her lithe frame.
She continued to babble, “I'm so glad you made it back safe! I was getting ready to drag Sungmin-unnie and Kyuhyun out of the tent they've holed themselves away in for the past couple of hours! And considering the noises they've been making, I'd probably be traumatized for life.”
“You poor thing, but what did you expect when you put them in charge of putting up the two tents?” Ryeowook consoled, petting Donghae's head condescendingly. “It looks like we're going to be sharing a tent, I refuse to use the one they've shut themselves up in.”
Behind the small group, one of the tents suddenly shook, unzipping to reveal the last two missing members of their group. Sungmin stumbled out first, Kyuhyun following closely behind, both girls looking disheveled from their hair to their clothes. The oldest of the group smiled brightly at seeing Ryeowook back at camp, however the youngest froze, eyes glued to Jongwoon's presence.
“Jongwoon-unnie!” Kyuhyun squeaked out, face paling. “What are you doing here?”
“Hello, Kyuhyun-sshi,” Jongwoon greeted with a smile. “I'm just returning a little lost mouse whom stumbled upon my secret hiding area. I didn't know you were going camping this weekend.”
Ryeowook glanced between the two, eying them in surprise. “Kyuhyun-ah, you know Jongwoon-unnie?”
“Yes, we're in church choir together,” Jongwoon answered. “You must know Kyuhyun-sshi from school?”
“Unnie?” Kyuhyun called hesitantly, nibbling her bottom lip. She was holding onto Sungmin's wrist, tugging it nervously.
“Don't worry Kyuhyun, I didn't see anything. I was just returning Ryeowook here, who you apparently let wonder the woods alone looking for wood.” Jongwoon looked at the group in amusement, dark brow raising slightly.
“Anyway,” she continued, “I need to get back before my mom realizes that I've left the house. Which she probably already has by now.”
Kyuhyun nodded, body relaxing as she put on a teasing smile. “That's right, isn't your family having dinner with Choi Siwon's today?”
Jongwoon's smile turned grim, “Unfortunately. It was bound to happen eventually, I was just hoping for more time.” As she finished her sentence, her eyes unconsciously moved to her left hand, where something silver gleamed in the sunlight.
A ring.
Oh.
For some unknown reason, Ryeowook felt her stomach clench uncomfortably at the sight of the smooth metal. The thought of Jongwoon being engaged was upsetting, even though they had only met about an hour ago. Perhaps it had to do with the fact that Jongwoon didn't seem thrilled with the idea either. Yeah, that's what Ryeowook would blame it on.
“It was nice meeting you, Ryeowook-ah. I hope it isn't the last time,” Jongwoon said, clearly getting ready to make her way back.
Ryeowook waved back, “Thank you, Unnie, for helping me return.”
Long after Jongwoon had left, Ryeowook was sitting quietly around a fire as Donghae and Sungmin argued over how to cook the food they brought for supper. Donghae, with her prior camping experience, was winning. Meanwhile, Kyuhyun slide down next to her.
“You know, you shouldn't look so upset over the fact that Jongwoon-unnie is engaged,” the youngest started, with a knowing smirk. “It's an arranged marriage her parents set up when she was young, one of the downsides to being part of high society I suppose.”
“Is that even legal anymore? Arranged marriages?”
Kyuhyun shrugged, “I'm not sure. I think Unnie's parents are pressuring her by threatening to take her out of the family will. To be honest, I've always been under the impression that she wasn't planning on going through with it.”
Humming, Ryeowook let the conversation fall silent.
Latter that night, as Ryeowook was getting ready to fall asleep, her phone beeped with an incoming message.
From Unknown:
Ryeowook-ah, it's Jongwoon! I hope you don't mind, but I got your number when I borrowed your phone earlier. Let's not stay out of touch! :)
Smiling brightly, Ryeowook thought that maybe she should make more plans to go camping. Except next time, she would do so alone.
~*~*~*~*~*~
Pouting, Ryeowook made her way through the woods, following a path she finally managed to memorize. After the first trip, she had been out to the camp site a couple of times, and this time Donghae had wanted to join her. The smaller girl had reluctantly agreed, knowing that Donghae's presence would make it difficult to sneak off and visit Jongwoon like she had been doing, but it hadn't ended up being a problem. Shortly after the two girls had finished setting up camp, Donghae's theater boyfriend, Kibum, had shown up.
“I hope you don't mind, Ryeowook-ah, but I knew you were going to sneak off to see Jongwoon-unnie so I thought it wouldn't be a problem.” Donghae at least had the presence of mind to look guilty, her bottom lip pushed out as she looked at the shorter girl with exaggeratedly wide eyes. “I should have asked first.”
Ryeowook huffed, it was no use dwelling on it now, as she was essentially banished from the site until Donghae gave her the okay. It would probably be a while, and until then she would be spending time with Jongwoon whom was already waiting for her at the clearing.
By the time she made it to her destination, Ryeowook's chest was heaving, leaning on a tree to catch her breath as Jongwoon watched in amusement.
“You should consider working out, Ryeowook-ah, if that small walk was enough to leave you like this,” the older joked. She was wearing a dark green floral sundress, a recurring theme that Ryeowook noticed from their many visits, that made her pretty as always. She herself was wearing a pair of jean shorts, and a plaid button up shirt. Appropriate clothes for camping, she thought.
“An hour long trek through the woods does not count as a small walk,” she shot back, making her way over so she could collapse on the blanket. As she continued to struggle to breath, Jongwoon shifted them both so that Ryeowook's head was resting on her lap, short fingers running through ever present pigtails.
“This is what, the fourth time you've come to visit me under the pretense of camping? I'd think you would be used to the distance by now.”
Sticking out her tongue, which only further amused Jongwoon, Ryeowook ignored her barb in order to complain about a different topic. “Well, I didn't come alone this time, Donghae-unnie wanted to go camping as well.”
“So you left her all by herself? You could have brought her along, you know.”
Ryeowook made a disgusted noise, nose scrunching up, “Except for the fact that her boyfriend showed up. Who knows what kind of horrible things their doing to my tent, and I'm going to have to sleep in it tonight!”
Bursting into laughter, Jongwoon jostled Ryeowook out of her lap as she clutched her sides. “I'm sorry, Ryeowook-ah. How long is her boyfriend sticking around for?”
“I didn't ask. But we only brought my tent, and it would be tight for the three of us. And awkward!” the younger added.
Jongwoon looked thoughtful for a moment, observing Ryeowook silently. “Why don't you ask your friend? If her boyfriend is planning on sticking around, you can always stay with me. It's not like I live that far, we're already on my property.”
It was Ryeowook's turn to look thoughtful, trying to hide how excited she was at the offer. Of course, being able to stay with Jongwoon relied on Kibum planning to stick around tonight. Not a thought she favored for her precious tent, but definitely worth the sacrifice. She pulled out her cell phone.
To Donghae:
Hey, how long is Kibum planning on staying? Jongwoon offered to let me stay with her . . .
It took a few minutes before she got a response.
From Donghae:
Well, if you're offering to 'disappear' for the night, I wouldn't mind keeping Kibum around longer. ;)
To Donghae:
You're disgusting, that's my tent you know. :(
From Donghae:
Sorry, love! I'll make it up to you somehow.
To Donghae:
You can buy me a new tent, and keep my current one. Or burn it.
From Donghae:
Okay, love, will do! Have fun with Jongwoon-unnie! ;)
Unbeknownst to her, she must have been scowling at her phone when reading the last few messages as Jongwoon started to chuckle.
“So, what did she say? Are you going to need a place to crash tonight?”
“Yes, I definitely will. I'm also going to need a new tent, apparently. I'm not sure how much I trust Donghae and Kibum to buy me a new one,” Ryeowook sulked. It was a brand new tent too, that her parents helped her buy when they noticed how often she was camping.
“You can worry about that another time. For now, let's just worry about if you need anything before I show you the way to my estate. I think I have some pajamas you can borrow tonight, and I can probably find a toothbrush for you as well. Is there anything else you'll need?” Jongwoon asked.
Ryeowook shook her head, she already had her phone on her, which spared her having to make a trip all the way back to the campsite. She couldn't think of anything else she might need on such short notice, but it didn't matter as Jongwoon was already dragging her up and collecting the blanket they had been sitting on.
The walk to Jongwoon's estate took less than ten minutes, and when Ryeowook saw the house her jaw dropped. More than a house, it looked big enough to be a castle, with three floors and a large yard. There was a circular driveway with a statue placed in the middle, a typical sight for those living as part of high-class society.
“Wow,” Ryeowook muttered, watching what she guessed were landscapers work outside. The estate was big, much bigger than she would have expected to see just outside of Seoul, the country's overpopulated capital.
“It's kind of big, I hope you don't get lost while you stay,” Jongwoon laughed, grabbing hold of Ryeowook's wrist to drag her to the main doorway.
“You aren't planning on leaving me alone, are you?” the younger joked, hoping that wouldn't be the case.
“Of course not, then you definitely would get lost. Trust me, we never leave guests alone without some way of finding their way around. We usually have the house staff stay nearby, though it usually takes them a few weeks to get used to the layout themselves.”
They had just entered the doorway, and were in the process of taking off their shoes, when a woman appeared trailed by a younger looking male.
“There you are, Jongwoon dear! I've been looking for you, where did you go off to?” the woman asked, openly eying Ryeowook with curiosity.
Feeling under dressed, and dirty with her mud stained sneakers, Ryeowook shuffled her feet nervously. This woman was probably Jongwoon's mother, which was just her luck that they would run into the woman shortly after stepping foot in the house.
“Sorry Mother, I was helping Ryeowook,” Jongwoon made a vague gesture towards Ryeowook with her hand. “She's going to need a place to stay for the night, so I offered to let her stay here.”
Jongwoon's mother eyed her more closely, “Oh? And how do you know Ryeowook? I don't believe you've ever mentioned her before.”
“I met her at the beginning of the summer, she's friends with Cho Kyuhyun. You remember Kyuhyun-ah, right? She's in church choir with me.”
“Of course I remember Kyuhyun, she's a sweetheart,” the older woman smiled. “Any friend of her's is always welcome here, it's nice to meet you Ryeowook-sshi.”
“It's nice to meet you as well,” Ryeowook returned, bowing politely.
“Anyway, Jongwoon. I was looking for you because Siwon decided to visit, wasn't that nice of him?”
The man behind Jongwoon's mother stepped forward, wide grin showing off twin dimples in his cheeks. It was with a sinking feeling that Ryeowook realized he was Choi Siwon, Jongwoon's fiance. He was tall, black hair carefully styled to accent his sharp jawline. Ryeowook had to admit that he was handsome, and she found herself second guessing what Kyuhyun had told her.
“I'm sorry to keep you waiting Siwon-sshi, I hope you don't mind if I keep you waiting a little longer. I'd like to get Ryeowook comfortable first.”
~*~*~*~*~*~
Casually flipping through a book found on Jongwoon's bookshelf, Ryeowook sighed for the umpteenth time. She's been shut up in Jongwoon's bedroom for the past half hour, with nothing more to do than explore. The older has a large book collection, which so far has been Ryeowook's sole source of entertainment.
Finally, the bedroom door opened, admitting Jongwoon who looked apologetic. “I'm sorry about that, I wasn't expecting him to show up today.”
“It's fine,” Ryeowook lied, hoping it didn't show on her face.
Jongwoon took note of the book in the younger's hand. “Do you like to read?”
Ryeowook nodded, “I used to borrow book's from the school library, which I can't do anymore now that I've graduated. At least I'll have a new place to get books in the fall, which means a different selection.”
“The university's library is impressive, I'm sure you'll find all kinds of new books to read. Until then, you can borrow some of mine if you want,” The older girl suggested. “That is, if you haven't read all of them already. But you have to promise to return them.”
An excuse to see Jongwoon again, at her house. Ryeowook wasn't sure if Jongwoon was implying that last thought, or if she was being hopeful. Either way, it set off the butterflies in her stomach, cheeks flushing slightly. She wasn't sure at what point her fascination of the other girl had transformed into a full blown crush, but that's exactly what had happened. Everything the other girl did seemed to draw her further in, with no way back. Not that she wanted a way back.
Murmuring a quiet thank you, Ryeowook held the book tight as she took a seat on the bed next to Jongwoon who smiled brightly.
“Well, then. Now that it's just the two of us, what do you want to do Ryeowook-ah?”
~*~*~*~*~*~
Ryeowook ducked her head closer to her book, trying to drown out the other customers in the small coffee shop she had chosen to study in. It was only a few weeks into her first semester at university, but the small girl was already busy with homework, piano practice, and other class projects her professors seemed to have an affinity for. Her current task was reading a book for her literature class and writing a seven page analysis, a large task for the music major.
The coffee shop she was currently seated in was small and directly off campus, which meant it drew a large percentage of university students. Ryeowook had originally been accompanied by Kyuhyun, the only one of her friends to attend the same university, but the other girl left to spend time with Sungmin. Even if the two hadn't said anything to their shortest friend, it was obvious they were having a hard time dealing with the sudden distance.
Behind her, the bell at the entrance way rung for the hundredth time that afternoon, barely pulling at Ryeowook's attention as her eyes raced over a new page in her book. A sudden voice behind her, no more than a minute later, however had her practically jumping out of her seat in surprise.
“Kim Ryeowook-sshi?”
Standing behind her was none other than Choi Siwon, dimpled smile directed her way when she finally turned around to face him.
“Oh, um,” the short girl stuttered, body held tight with tension as she eyed the tall man cautiously. “Hello, Siwon-oppa.”
“I hope you don't mind me intruding on your space,” he started off, taking a seat opposite her at the table, “but I saw you sitting here by yourself and wanted to chat, if that's okay.”
“Of course!” Ryeowook said on instinct, instantly regretting it when she realized she just trapped herself inside a coffee shop with her crush's fiance. “What brings you here, Siwon-oppa? You're not still attending university, are you?”
Siwon laughed, mouth hanging wide open displaying perfectly aligned white teeth. It was no wonder that other girls who saw him seemed to swoon, Ryeowook admitted, Siwon was a very handsome man. “No, I'm here attending a function that Jongwoon's mother is hosting. I thought you would've known, considering how she's also there, and how you two seemed to be glued at the hip recently.”
It was true, ever since the first night that Ryeowook spent over at Jongwoon's house, the two had been meeting up multiple times during the week, including even more sleep overs. Not that anything happened during those nights, even if Ryeowook's imagination liked to pretend otherwise.
Ryeowook nodded, “I forgot that was today. But shouldn't you still be there? I'm sure the others will be looking for you.”
“I told them I was stepping out for a bit, thought I could sneak off and grab some coffee. The stuff they're serving is barely tolerable,” Siwon visibly cringed, sending Ryeowook into a brief fit of laughter.
“Anyway,” the older male continued, “I had something specific I wanted to talk to you about, so when I saw you through the window, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity.”
He seemed to hesitate at this point, making Ryeowook's gut clench nervously. “Do you remember when we first met? It was very briefly in the summer, when Jongwoon first let you stay over. She and I had a very interesting conversation that day, when I briefly borrowed her from you.”
“Oh?” Ryeowook asked, uncertain as to where the conversation was going, therefore not knowing what else she could say.
“Did she ever tell you that our engagement was prearranged by our parents, when we were younger?”
“I heard that, but it wasn't from Jongwoon-unnie,” Ryeowook admitted.
Siwon smiled, “Well, who ever told you was telling the truth. I was eight when my parents first told me about it, and at the time I didn't really understand what they were telling me. What eight year old truly understands what a marriage is? Anyway, I first met Jongwoon when I was 14 and she was 16, and at first I was upset about the fact that she was older. But as I got to know her, and see what type of person she was outside of her parent's influence, I realized that maybe it wouldn't be too bad. She's attractive, smart, has a strange sense of humor, and can admittedly be rather clumsy. But overall, some could consider it to be rather endearing.”
Ryeowook agreed, it was exactly those traits that attracted her, and Jongwoon definitely was endearing in her own way. Even if she was a bit awkward at times.
“I eventually grew to accept the fact that we would eventually be married,” the male continued. “After all, considering the fact that it was set up by my parents, it could have been worse. Jongwoon on the other hand didn't seem to be as okay, but I didn't think about it until this past summer when she changed.”
Fiddling with her empty ice coffee cup, Ryeowook bit her lip anxiously before blurting, “Why are you telling me this? It's not really any of my business . . .” she trailed off.
Siwon only smiled at her, “I'm getting to that. You first met Jongwoon this summer, right?”
Ryeowook nodded silently.
“I'm guessing that's when the change first started, as I don't know exactly when the two of you met. But Jongwoon seemed to be happier, and she was always disappearing where her family couldn't find her. I was a bit worried, until I met you, Ryeowook-sshi.
“The reason why I'm telling you this, is because the day you and I met, Jongwoon finally told me she wasn't going to go through with the wedding,” Siwon admitted, staring pointedly at Ryeowook.
Feeling like she was both suffocating under the other's gaze and floating from the news, the short girl could only make a quiet garbled noise while nervously tugging on one of her pig tails. A nervous habit she developed when younger. She was sure her mouth was opening and shutting repeatedly, but Ryeowook was helpless to stop as her thoughts raced noisily in her mind.
Kyuhyun had told her that Jongwoon probably wasn't going to go through with the engagement, but it was one thing to hear it from her friend and another to hear it from Jongwoon's fiance. It was like a ray of hope, that maybe she had a chance with the older girl. But with that hope came a bit of dread, why was Siwon telling her this?
Siwon burst out laughing, clutching the table with both hands while shaking his head, “Don't worry, I'm not upset with you. Even if Jongwoon hadn't met you, she probably still wouldn't have married me. Besides, as I said, I had only grown to accept that I was going to marry her. Now she'll get to be with someone she loves, and maybe I'll have that same chance.”
“Just maybe?” Ryeowook ventured.
“Just maybe,” Siwon parroted back. “Who knows how my family is going to react to the news, they might go out and find me a new fiancee.”
“Maybe you should do what Jongwoon is, and tell your parents that you're not going to marry someone they pick for you.”
“Maybe, but enough of this. I need to get back for they send out a search party, I've been gone for too long. You should come back with me. Take a break from your homework, I'm sure Jongwoon would appreciate the surprise,” the tall man invited, still smiling.
“I shouldn't, I wasn't invited and I'm not dressed appropriately for a function.” Ryeowook looked down at her outfit which consisted of a pair or dark skinny jeans, and a plain red t-shirt.
Siwon shook his head, “It's an open event for all students, casual attire. Trust me, when I left there were quiet a few people dressed in holey pants and sweatshirts. Besides, one of the music professors has been bragging about this talented new piano student he has, and Jongwoon's mother may have discovered that he was talking about you before I left.”
“Park-seonsaengnim!” Ryeowook gasped, face turning scarlet. She knew her professor had been impressed by her piano playing, but she didn't realizing he was going around talking about her to other people.
“The one and only,” Siwon confirmed. “Come on, there's even a piano where the function's being held. You can give everyone a live performance. Jongwoon seemed rather eager to hear you play as well, when she heard Park-seonsaengnim's glowing review.”
Well, if Jongwoon wanted to hear her play the piano. Which was why, twenty minutes later, Ryeowook suddenly found herself entering a room packed with mingling people. They were gathered in groups making small talk, eating food and drinking something that Ryeowook couldn't tell what it was.
Siwon took a quick glance around, motioned for Ryeowook to follow, then took off for the opposite side of the room. They found Jongwoon with her mother, both of their backs turned, along with Park-seonsaengnim and a few others Ryeowook didn't recognizing. She was standing behind Siwon when they made it to the group, so no one noticed.
“Siwon-ah, you made it back! That seemed to take longer than you thought,” one of the unknown man exclaimed.
“I got a bit distracted, Father,” Siwon responded, causing another uncomfortable tug in Ryeowook's stomach. “I found a little mouse and decided to drag her along.”
He moved to the side, revealing Ryeowook to the group.
“Ryeowook-ah!” Jongwoon practically squealed, face lighting up. She skipped to where Ryeowook was standing, throwing both arms around the small girl to drag her over to the circle of people. From this close, the older girl smelled like vanilla and cinnamon, her red dress a perfect match to Ryeowook's shirt.
“Ryeowook-sshi, perfect timing!” Park-seonsaengnim exclaimed, he was grinning widely. “I was just telling Kim-seonsaengnim and Jongwoon here about how your piano lessons are coming along.”
“You should play us a song, Ryeowook dear,” Jongwoon's mother added, though her attention seemed to be on her daughter, who was still persistently clinging to Ryeowook's body.
“There's a piano right here,” her professor said, gesturing to the instrument twenty feet away.
“Sure,” Ryeowook consented. She wasn't usually shy about playing the piano in front of others, but with Jongwoon squealing happily in her ear, she could feel the butterflies taking off in her stomach. “Unnie, it's a little hard to play the piano without the use of my arms.”
“Oh! Sorry, Ryeowook-ah. Let's go!” Jongwoon said, dragging the girl over to the piano.
Making a quick decision, Ryeowook played one of her assignments that Park-seonsaengnim had been particularly happy with. The song had a perfect combination of slow and fast tempos, as well as key changes, to display her wide range of abilities. As her fingers flew over ivory and obsidian keys, the growing crowd became a background noise easily ignored. Before she knew it, the song was over, and Ryeowook was brought back by the sound of applause from behind her.
Also by Jongwoon, who had chosen to throw herself at the younger girl, thin arms clutching her tightly. “That was amazing, Ryeowook! I didn't know you could play the piano so well,” she gushed.
“It was indeed a captivating performance,” another voice said. When Ryeowook turned around, she found that most of the room had turned to watch her, the voice belonging to an older male she hadn't seen before.
Jongwoon, who was still clinging to her, whispered in her ear, “That's the University's President.”
Ryeowook immediately shot up, bowing lowly, “Thank you, sir. I'm glad you liked it.”
“This is Kim Ryeowook,” Park-seonsaengnim interrupted, “she's one of my students, and this is only her first semester on campus.”
“Oh?” the University's President asked. “With talent like that, you must be attending on a full scholarship.”
The small girl shook her head, “Only a partial scholarship.”
The older male smiled kindly. “We'll have to see if that can be changed,” he said, then turned around and left.
“What did he mean by that?” Ryeowook asked, turning around to face Jongwoon. She didn't realize how close it would bring their faces, noses only inches apart. From this distance, Ryeowook could make out hazel specks in Jongwoon's eyes, which were twinkling, the surrounding skin crinkled. Jongwoon's gaze softened, taking on a fond look, and Ryeowook could only think about what Siwon had told her earlier. How Jongwoon had changed, around the time she had met Ryeowook, the older male implying that maybe it was because of her.
“I'm not sure. But before you arrived, Park-seonsaengnim was saying how one of the full scholarship students has left campus. Maybe it has to do with that?”
Maybe.

Long thin arms stretched over a head of dark brown hair, the sleeves of Jongwoon's dark blue cardigan slipping to her elbows and showing off pale skin. It took much of Ryeowook's self-restraint not to reach up and fix the sleeves herself, or just grab a wrist to caress the soft looking skin. Instead she chose to watch as the older girl fixed them, staring back at the younger in amusement.
The two were out in the clearing again, a week after the university function, taking advantage of an unusual warm front sweeping through South Korea. It would probably be the last time the two could hang out outside before temperatures became too cold. Not that Ryeowook had dressed appropriately for the cooling fall weather, she was currently trying to distract herself from the chill air by staring at the changing leaves, some of which had already begun to fall.
“Have you heard anything about the scholarship?” Jongwoon asked, head tilted as she stared inquisitively at Ryeowook.
“Not yet,” the small girl shook her head. “It's probably too early, anyway. Even if they are planning on bumping me up to a full scholarship, I'm sure the process takes a lot of time.”
The dark haired girl nodded her head, staring around at the trees surrounding them. They lapsed into another brief silence that was broken by Jongwoon again.
“What are your friends up to this weekend? You're not ditching them to see me, are you?”
Ryeowook laughed, “No. Donghae is visiting her boyfriend again, and Sungmin and Kyuhyun are hanging out. We'll get together and do something tomorrow.”
“That's good. We've been spending so much time together that I was beginning to worry you were neglecting them.”
Jongwoon paused, eying Ryeowook curiously. “You know, ever since we've started hanging out, I don't think I've heard you ever talk about a boyfriend. Or a girlfriend.”
“That's because I'm not seeing anyone,” Ryeowook admitted, face becoming hot. There had been a boy briefly in her freshman year or high school, but it had become clear early on that boys weren't exactly her thing. Not that she would say so in front of her current crush, lest she embarrass herself.
“That's too bad, you're very pretty.” Jongwoon leaned forward, tugging at a pigtail, then reaching up to smooth a fly away hair behind Ryeowook's ear. She was giving the smaller girl a piercing stare, making the shorter nervous about what exactly she was seeing.
All of a sudden, the older started leaning forward, fingers moving to trace lightly over Ryeowook's upper lip. “I'd really like to kiss you, is that okay?” A bare whisper, warm breath ghosting across Ryeowook's mouth.
Unable to talk, due to her mouth drying out, Ryeowook nodded, watching as Jongwoon closed the rest of the space.
Jongwoon's mouth was soft against her own, feeling much like a firm pillow but better. Their lips slid together, timidly at first as though scared of frightening the other away, before pressing harder. Ryeowook moaned first, pulling a similar reaction out of the other who parted her lips to suck gently on the smaller girl's upper one. It quickly escalated from there, teeth soon clacking together and tongues gliding across each other. There was spit spread out over Ryeowook's lips, but she wasn't complaining. The fierce kiss was making her skin burn, a warmth pool low in her tummy, and the space between her legs tingle in anticipation.
She was the first to move, hands which had been grasping desperately at Jongwoon's shoulders sliding down her spine to grasp at her lower back. Hot lips moved away from hers, sliding down her throat to mouth at the juncture between her neck and shoulders. There would probably be a mark there later, but for now, Ryeowook didn't care.
They continued to make out, occasionally licking and nipping at each other's necks, until a beam of sunlight caught on a silver band decorating Jongwoon's left hand. Her engagement ring.
“Ryeowook-ah. . .” she started, sounding uncertain. “You remember that Siwon and I are engaged, right?”
“He told me.”
Jongwoon blinked, looking baffled. “What?”
“Last week, when Siwon-oppa brought me to the function. Before we arrived, he told me that you told him you weren't planning on going through with the engagement.” Ryeowook paused before continuing, “Kyuhyun-sshi also told me that she didn't think you would go through with it either.”
“Is that so?” Looking decidedly not upset about the other two talking about her behind her back, Jongwoon focused instead on the younger girl in her arms. “Well, they were right. I don't think I'm quite ready to break the news to my family, but I'm definitely not going married to Siwon.”
“I-I'm glad, Unnie,” Ryeowook stuttered quietly, one hand retracting to tug at a pig tail.
Jongwoon smiled brightly, “Me too. The truth is, I really like you.” She suddenly made a disgusted face, “Ugh, that made me sound like a lovesick teenager all over again.”
Ryeowook laughed, “That's okay. I really like you too, even when you sound like a lovesick teenager.”
The two met again, this time in a clash of teeth and tongues. They were both panting when Jongwoon pushed Ryeowook over onto the quilt they were occupying, crawling over her slim form.
“If I go too far, let me know and I'll stop,” she warned. Ryeowook nodded, too caught up in the hand tracing over her stomach to pay much attention.
Trailing down until her hand met the other's jeans, Jongwoon swiftly undid the button and zipper, quickly slipping inside Ryeowook's underwear. The older girl wasted no time in sliding smooth fingers through the younger's slick folds, spreading the clear fluid she found around while still restricted by cotton material. She pressed her thumb against Ryeowook's clit, rubbing small circles, which earned her a broken moan.
Ryeowook wasn't sure how much more she was going to be able to take, back arching when Jongwoon slipped a finger inside of her. The digit was shorter than her own, but slightly thicker which made Ryeowook all the wetter when a second joined the first one.
All it took was a few more passes of her fingers, and the circling of her thumb to have Ryeowook tumbling over the edge, vaginal walls clenching down tight enough to temporarily trap Jongwoon's hand. When she was free to move again, Jongwoon retracted her hand to suck off the clear fluid, enjoying the way Ryeowook stared with wide eyes and flushed cheeks.
“What about you?” Ryeowook asked, voice husky as she reached towards Jongwoon's hips.
Jongwoon shook her head, “Don't worry, I've got it.”
She pressed one of the younger girl's legs flat to the ground, then straddled over the thigh while pulling her dress up to show off expensive white panties. Sitting down, Jongwoon began rocking her hips back and forth, rubbing against the material of Ryeowook's jeans. Catching on to what the older girl was doing, Ryeowook reached up to hold onto Jongwoon's hips, helping her to move.
It took a little longer for her to get off than Ryeowook had, what with the barrier of clothes, but when she did, Jongwoon's body curled forward, eventually tumbling on top of the younger. They kissed lazily for a moment, taking their time to catch their breath when Jongwoon suddenly broke out into laughter.
“There's already a mark forming on you neck!”
“What!” Ryeowook clasped a hand over the area Jongwoon had been sucking at earlier, feeling a tingling sensation. She groaned, “Ugh, when Kyuhyun sees this, I'll never hear the end of it.”
“Don't you have blackmail on her? I seem to recall you complaining about how she can't keep her hands off of Sungmin.”
“I guess, as long as she doesn't tell Donghae-unnie. She's super overprotective of me, and I'm not even sure why.”

“Unnie! What is that?!” Kyuhyun shouted at Ryeowook.
The girl in question barely spared her friend a glance, not even registering what her friend had said as she sat down in the university's cafeteria. 7 o'clock was too early to be awake on a Monday morning, even if she had class in an hour. She was just getting ready to take a sip of her coffee, when a strange noise sounded from just beneath her ear.
“What the- Kyuhyun! What are you doing?” Ryeowook shoved the other girl's hand away, which had been holding her phone to take a picture of her neck.
Wait.
Picture of her neck . . .
“Kyuhyun!”
“I'm sorry Ryeowook-unnie, but you weren't answering my question. I sent a picture to Jongwoon-unnie, seeing as it looks a lot like a hickey, I thought she might know what happened.”
Oh, just to Jongwoon. Ryeowook let out a sigh of relief, that was okay.
“I also sent it to Donghae-unnie, I figured she would want to know that someone defiled her precious dongsaeng.”
Ryeowook buried her head in her hands, groaning. She was interrupted from her pity party by her own phone going off, a text message.
From Donghae:
I'll be over around noon. :(
Well then, today was already promising to be an interesting day, and Ryeowook hadn't even had her coffee yet. Her phone light up for a second time.
From Jongwoon:
I just got the picture, let me know if you want some moral support! <3
Ryeowook would certainly be needing moral support if she wanted to survive Donghae's visit. She was lucky she had a girlfriend who was willing to do just that. To think that all it took to find an amazing girlfriend like Jongwoon was getting lost in the woods.
