A few years ago, yanigisawa recommended to me that I use AdAware to remove spyware from my computer. I used it for several years, but the last several months, I noticed it wasn't catching very many spyware items. It used to be that I would scan and it would find seventy spyware items, but then it suddenly started only finding one or two. Now, this could have meant that suddenly all the spyware people had given up, but I found it more likely that AdAware had just stopped catching them.
A few days ago, I was talking with a Dell support guy (my computer has been having tons of problems lately - long story), and he mentioned that they have a memo that AdAware slows down computers. Given that I now had evidence that AdAware not only was ineffective but also was slowing down my computer, I uninstalled it. My computer does run noticeably faster now.
Does anyone have a recommendation for a reliable, free anti-spyware program? I could buy one if necessary, but my healthy American sense of entitlement makes me think that all software should really be free.
