1) The current writer's block prompt says, "What celebrity would you change your sexual identity for?" At first I was thinking they meant, "What celebrity would you get a sex change for?" And see, I wasn't even thinking of it as being for a romantic encounter. I briefly interpreted it more as, "John Turturro's acting ability is so amazing, it makes me want to be a man!"
2) I just watched The Savages with my mother. If you haven't seen it, it's about [not really a spoiler alert because I think you can tell this from the trailer, but spoiler alert! anyway] two siblings who have to deal with their father's getting old and having to be put into a nursing home. On the one hand, I would recommend this movie because it's engrossing, realistic, and well-acted. (This is the first movie that made me understand why people get so excited over Philip Seymour Hoffman.) On the other hand, it's devastating. It's hard to watch because you know you're going to have to go through the same thing one day. Or else you've already gone through it. And you know that you're going to feel just as terrible about yourself and your morals as these characters do. My mom and watched it alone (my dad's spending the night at work because of the snow), and Mom said, "We can't let Dad watch this. Let's be sure to send it back [to Netflix] before he gets home." I thought she meant because it would make him think about his own death and what would happen to him. That's what I was thinking about, anyway. Then she said, "He went through this enough already with his father." So, man. Universality sucks.
Oh, and 3) As a result of watching this movie, I asked Mom what she wanted us to do with her, and eventually the conversation changed enough that I was able to get up the courage to ask if I could have one of her two nice china sets as a wedding present rather than inheriting it as I've asked before. She said yes! So now I get my paternal grandmother's gorgeous setting for 12 as a wedding present! (My dad got it for my grandmother when he was in the service. I believe he was on shore leave in Japan.)
