Okay, livejournal just ate a three-paragraph giganto-comment. To sum up, what froggirl said, it'll get better. Also, if there weren't an insane number of social strictures and mores and such forbidding it, you could totally have some of my dollars.

It pisses me off, though, 'cause I did the time living in a $240 apartment with a fold-out bed and ate ramen and got pulled over for skin-color inspection. Now that I have as much cash as covers the immediate luxuries, why can't I just throw checks at people? You over there, you seem sad, have dollars! Stupid non-communistic-utopian society.

I don't know that people really have a problem with it. I think if you wanted to pick one person (not me) who you know needs money and give them, say, $100 a month, that would be fine. It's not like you'd go around advertising it, and I think those who did know would be supportive.

Ah, okay. See, I would have to disagree there. In my experience, "you should totally give charity to other people (not me)" is one of those universal human sentiments on the level of "baby ducks are cute" or "I would rather not be on fire". This seems dumb to me, but there it is - an actual offer of monies, as opposed to a generalized expression of financial sympathy, is a pretty decent social compact violation and should be avoided. Which is stupid. I blame capitalism.
