FYI, this won't make sense without knowing that milk-first used to be an indicator of being working or middle-class in the UK, whereas tea-first was for posh people.

“Would you care for some tea, Mr Potter?” Narcissa said.

Harry hitched a smile onto his face. “Yes please.”

A house-elf arrived with a little tea tray, and Harry fought not to look sour. Draco had a long-term strategy about the house-elf thing with his parents, and there was no point in messing it up.

Narcissa handed Harry a bone-china cup on its saucer, and smiled sweetly. He glanced at Draco - was she making him pour first because it was poisonous? - and at Draco’s slight nod, he poured a splash of milk into his teacup.

He heard Draco draw a breath in sharply, and glanced up. “What?”

“Nothing,” Draco said, smiling like his teeth hurt. There was a dead little silence. “Nothing,” Draco repeated, glaring at his mother

It doesn't make any now (it used to make a difference to whether the china would crack, based on its quality) but it used to be a class marker :) So it's a good avenue for Draco and Narcissa to have a passive-aggressive fight about Draco fucking a middle-class halfblood.

Happy birthday! What's the next country you want to travel to?

I mean I'm thousands of pounds in debt and when I go to places it's cons here in London BUT. Next year there's a big con in Dublin and a lot of my friends'll be going. Alternatively, it's occurred to me that I have two years to hit somewhere in South America, and then I'll have visited all six continents (not doing Antarctica) before I'm thirty...

Any chance you'll spend a while in China? I know you liked Japan and Korea, and obviously love Taiwan, but since you've studied Chinese so much now...

Definitely I want to spend some time in China (but social meeediaaaaaa), and lately, um, okay this makes me sound so ridiculous, but I feel like I have to go to Japan because all my tinders are so into Japanese literature, and I'm like, okay, this is clearly a huge gaping hole in my small talk repertoire. Well I guess that is no different from deciding to teach abroad because I like read one of your lj entries. Seriously my life decisions are so ridiculous.

But anyway, so maybe Japan is next. And the way I'm thinking about it right now is Japan and then back to Taiwan, but I also originally thought it was going to be Taiwan and then back to Korea, but life only moves in one direction!

LOL that would totally be a decision I'd make. And I do think there's a logic to like, 'all of these people who're kinda like me enjoy this thing, I should check it out.'

I'm so tempted by Japan, but I'm too lazy :P

Ummm. Honestly I think probably my BFF Violet (and preferably her lovely wife the Dark Lady, but I'd live without her if need be) because Violet not only very good company but also enormously competent and patient, and I am a disaster who needs that in a backpacking companion.
