I got tagged twice in the I Would Go Down With This Ship meme, so I’m choosing to do ten ships :D I’m such a multishipper that this was really hard!!! There are definitely ships I feel passionately about that I didn’t put on here because I enjoy/am fascinated by other ships that include those characters. (Buffy/Faith, Harry/Draco, Natasha/Steve, and Thor/Loki in particular.)
1. Kara/Cat in Supergirl. I LOVE THEM MORE AND MORE WITH EACH EPISODE. I WANT THEM TO MAKE OUUUUUUTTT. And like. James is very handsome and nice, but I also enjoy his relationship with Lucy, and anyway - I know it’s kind of messed up given the power dynamic but THEY MAKE ME FEEL THINGS.
2. Sokka/Suki. I love them both to pieces, and I love them even more when they’re together. And that's what I really want in my happy ships, that they make each other better. I love that their Hero Skills compliment each other so well and that they're FUN and she’s FUNNY. Sokka’s storyline of learning to be way less sexist is one of my favourites, and she’s a big part of that, and she's such a Big Damn Hero and when he finds her in the prison I go all breathless and. Man. I am usually really really meh about teenage relationships that last - me and Glee had a difficult time of it on that front - but SOKKA AND SUKI ARE FOREVER.
3. Doctor/River. THE ULTIMATE. I love her with Ten, I love her with Eleven, and oh god I love her with Twelve. River brings out all my favourite parts of the Doctor and she is so wicked and delightful and heartbreaking and fun and gorgeous. So many of my ultimate favourite moments in DW have been between the two of them, even while they've had some very dark moments too. The only character I've ever shipped with the Doctor except for the Master - and River and the Master have some similarities for sure. And it's so unusual for a cheerfully amoral space adventurer with a ~special connection to our hero to be a woman, and. Argh. I mean you saw the last Christmas special, what could I possibly add.
4. Puck/Quinn. Having just said I'm meh on teenage relationships that last, I'm sad that Glee implied their relationship was at the very off-again at the last, because he accepted her for who she was and she saw what he was capable of being. And I really liked the overall arc of their relationship, from pregnancy to her meltdown and him grasping to help her, her getting away and finding independence and him managing to rescue himself when Finn wasn't there any more and them coming back together. How they unexpectedly can give each other what they need, and can love and accept each other's pasts while becoming happier more evolved people.
5. Amy/Rory. PONDS. YOU HAVE SUCH DELIGHTFUL FACES. I adore Amy's hesitation and that by the end her choice is an inevitability, that she ran off the night before her wedding and then they brought him along too, that they have trouble communicating and end up waiting for each other and that bad timing is such a defining feature of both their lives, but Love Conquers All and in the end they're both out of time together. I would totally go down with this ship and was irritated by people acting like the love “triangle” wasn't resolved long after it OBVIOUSLY WAS; we saw Amy grow up and choose what she wanted and it was beautiful.
6. Nezumi/Shion. Okay there's honestly no competition in the fandom or really in canon, so this seemed like cheating, but I really do love their relationship, it literally couldn't hit more of my narrative kinks if it tried. Complementary opposites who change each other and teach each other... I would be willing to capslock at strangers on the internet if they were wrong about this ship, that's deep love for me :D
7. Korra/Asami. I ADOOORE THEM. Their connection and how it grows, their final magical moment of the hand-fasting and sacred light, all the comedy moments and also HOLY FUCK IT'S ACTUALLY CANON, like I will never be over that. The letters while Korra was away. Too many feelings.
8. Sam/Mercedes. They are both wonderful, and they both deserve to be happy, and they make each other happy. Case closed.
9. Nina/George. I really like George in the OT3 but like... ultimately fluff in that 'verse can't hold and Mitchell can't resist. I love Nina and George together, all their scenes together delight me - cute comedy, or her feminism slapping him down, or deep angst.
10. Mai/Zuko. OH YES. Did I say something about complementary opposites and characters finding exactly what they each needed, unexpectedly? These two are both dark, good-looking Fire Nation aristocracy with some brooding, so they're superficially similar, but they deal with pain and emotion in completely opposite ways.
sistermagpie has a beautiful meta post about how Mai changes in no small part due to Zuko's example,
here. (I know, Zuko as an example of how to feel your feelings and process them heathily, I KNOW. But it's true!) She needs someone who will do anything for purely emotional reasons, who makes futile gestures that mean everything to him and can show her the value in not being apathetic; and he needs someone who snarls and is hurt when he leaves without warning and then he betrays her again so he can run off with the Avatar, and she doesn't hurt him horribly or hate him forever - she rescues him despite everything it'll mean. Plus I think it's good for both of them to find something - someone - non-awful and colonialist in the Fire Nation.
Plus, despite their fumbles, those writers know how to do a good self-sacrificing hero moment. BECAUSE I LOVE ZUKO MORE THAN I FEAR YOU.
Huh. There’s a lot more het than I expected, and way more canon ships - but then if I really enjoy a canon ship I will indeed go down with it, because why mess with perfection??? As opposed to fanon ships that I sail passionately but often abandon for some dinghy I like.
It also reminded me how much I tend to be either really down with all the canon relationships in a given series, or almost none of them.
