I realised I have several mini-updates, so here is a list.
1. I have had a terrible cold this week but needed to work (this just in: zero hours contracts are bullshit) and my great-aunt died. I didn't know her at all really, but my Grandpa is very sad of course and a beloved great-uncle who I do know is in hospital. >.< DISAPPROVE. Still not sure if I'm going to get Wednesday off to go to the funeral.
2. The finale of book 3 of Legend of Korra makes me cry so much. First when Korra is dying of the poison - not so much because I think the title character is going to die with a season left to go, but in sympathy with all the other characters who're so sad. And then happy tears over Jinora and “the first airbending master in a generation” and “the world began anew for us” and the swelling music and how she looks so much like Aang and the hug with Tenzin. SO MANY TEARS. I am literally wibbling again thinking about it.
2a. I am continually amazed at the huge leap in quality between books 2 and 3 of Korra. I like books 1 and 2 overall and they have some great stuff, but they go from 'imaginative but somewhat mediocre' to 'utter fabulousness that, to me, edges out the best of Last Airbender' in a single bound. It's crazy.
3. Work is so messed up right now. The Director of Studies left a week ago (having given a month's notice) and a new one still hasn't been hired. The assistant DoS and the office manager went on holiday/had operations requiring surgery last week as well. It is RIDICULOUS. Also the overall manager continues to lie to our faces and generally fuck us over.
4. On the plus side, I am FINALLY going to be paid a bonus for teaching an exam class (with its attendant extra marking). And even though I'm low-paid for a teacher of my experience in London, I am making more than twice what I was this time last year, glory hallelujah and bless full-time hours.
5. Tonight I went out with my dear BFFs Miss Godfrey, Violet and Sappho*, and we did an Escape Room. This is this brilliant thing where you're locked in a room with all these puzzles and you have an hour to get out. You can get up to three clues. We only needed one, and apparently even with all the clues there's only a 40% success rate, and we had nine minutes left on the clock! GO US. It was super-exciting and fun, and we all had moments where we shone and worked something out. Miss Godfrey was super-methodical and stuck with this thing until she got it, Violet is just really great at puzzles and lateral thinking, and Sappho seriously shone with these little puzzles because they'd all been taken from The Hobbit. Like we just started reading them out and she'd tell you the answer. And we worked together and stuff. <3 If I am ever in a zombie apocalypse, I want it to be with these ladies. Not least because their sartorial choices thrill me.
6. ELECTION IN LESS THAN A WEEK. Sappho's childhood BFF who is a wonderful person is also a researcher for a Tory MP. Said INSIDE WOMAN said the Tory prediction before was a Labour/SNP coalition. I would honestly have been very happy with that - Labour could certainly do with a more left-wing junior partner and I think it'd help improve the state of the union - buuuut who knows what with Miliband being all 'NOPE NEVER'. I'm probably going to have Election Night with Miss Godfrey's boyfriend, because he's great and also works weird hours so we can stay up together shouting at the telly and coming up with new nicknames for Farage.
7. Speaking of the election and shitheads, I'm thankfully in a safe Labour seat but I got a flyer from the UKIP candidate. Like, it's not news that they are awful (I'm sorry, but I just have no more temperate descriptions left for people who run as UKIP members) but he could've been a bit more subtle with his dogwhistling. I live in Lewisham, a fairly central, diverse, and not very moneyed area. Rent/house prices are a huge issue for Londoners - we spend 60% of our income on rent/mortgages, on average. So he was all “I will deal with house prices, because as it is INNER LONDONERS are being forced to move out here! ~INNER ~LONDONERS.” Like, whatever could that be code for?
8. I saw Avengers OVER A WEEK AGO and have not posted due to life being busy, what is even happening. I need to watch it again to have any real thoughts, I think, but: liked it on the whole, especially the focus on rescuing civilians and the presence of minor characters. It did not make me reconciled to Natasha/Bruce and I hate that passionately, particularly because it's so UGH HOLLYWOOD AND ITS AGE GAPS.
9. IT'S MAY, IT'S MAY, THE LUSTY MONTH OF MAY. Happy Beltane everybody!

*Sappho is Violet's fiancée and has been nicknamed various things, but this is perfect given Sappho's the original gay goth.
