Hey, remember when months ago I said I was gonna do a weekly rec post and you guys voted Saturday top?
No, neither do I, it was all back before Christmas. BUT. Here begin my weekly rec posts! Split by fandom and medium, because that’s how
secretsolitaire does it and it seems sensible.
Harry Potter fic recs
A Toy For Christmas by Anonymous (Barty Crouch Jr/Draco, NC-17, ~2500. Underage, teacher/student, D/s, humiliation.)
I love this rarepair, and I love how Anon wrote it. This is a young and silly Draco, still haughty yet easily brought down; his every line rings true and omg, the humiliation, I love it. The best part though is Barty’s voice; so crazed yet clinging to rationality, so witty and fun in a villainous way, so ruthless. He’s maybe my favourite Potter villain and I really loved seeing his outlook on the world -- and on the next wimpy blond heir that people underestimated :)
The Zabini Connection by
fleshdress (Blaise/Draco, R, ~8k-ish I think. Murder and silliness.)
This is an old fic but a great one, and it’s one of those ones I think everyone should read, regardless of whether you’re into the pairing or not. Because it’s incredibly witty and fun and the narrative voice just sweeps you away and for something so short without much silly introspection, the characterisation is perfect. By the end Blaise, who stands amidst drama and silliness, is very clearly a reaction to his family life, and you completely believe he and Draco should be together. Seriously, one of my all-time favourites.
Doctor Who fanvids
Galaxies by Niyalune. (New Who Doctors and Companions gen, G.)
This vid makes me well up EVERY DAMN TIME. From joy. It’s beautifully edited but really very simple: it’s about the New Who Doctors and their Companions and how brilliant they all are. Not a hint of X Is Better and it really evokes, for me, that sense of joy in the universe which Who does at its best.

I ACTUALLY CANNOT CAPSLOCK ENOUGH. Like, I read this fic months ago but still remembered it for this post. Because I love it.
It’s a university!AU and EVERYTHING ABOUT IT IS PERFECT. It could not ring any more true for me in my particular experience of university and thus it makes me cry for nostalgia and weep for joy. Just, everyone has the absolute perfect position and is hilarious (Jack’s running a Freud reading group! River is a feminist professor who gives out muffins! Amy goes to Martha’s bioethics seminar because she fancies her! Sarah Jane is the Union’s General Manager!) and also just there are Young Conservatives and people complaining about the representative councillors and Amy is doing Student Politics to smack them down and everyone’s going to get sparkly in a gay bar at the weekend. I mean. DOCTOR WHO AND UNIVERSITY LIFE FIC BY SOMEONE FUNNY. INARTICULATE JOY.
Also Amy/Rory is adorable and the dialogue is awesome, because it’s by
such_heights.
I have Thor and Sherlock recs waiting seeing as they’re eating my brain right now, but I have to go and see the new Holmes film and have sushi and talk about the part with the riding crop. So, enjoy and I will rec the rest next week :)
