“Spike! Look after Dawn, I’ve got to go.” Buffy’s face was tight, and so was her grip on her axe. She didn’t wait for him to respond, simply turned and ran back into the night.

Spike blinked. Dawn blushed, shifting on her coltish legs. “Sorry. She’s not great at the whole ‘asking for a favour’ thing.”

He shrugged and tried to remember if he’d left Fanny Hill where Dawn could get it. “Not a favour. I’ll have company while I watch the telly now, won’t I?”

She rolled her eyes and brushed past him. “Not Passions.”

“Oi! Whose telly is it?”

Spike was still underground, but this time he didn’t have a TV. So Dawn brought a stack of books down to the basement, one sticky from ancient OJ.

He smiled, shifted, didn’t meet her eyes. “Thanks, Niblet.”

She scowled at the nickname, fighting instant tears. He’d betrayed Buffy when she knew he could be kind and good. Her big sister.

“Dawn - ” Spike touched her wrist, his face abruptly desperate. “Listen, I - ”

She tried to make her eyes as cold as Buffy’s could be. “Don’t.”

Buffy had never trusted him, and so she might forgive him. Dawn had, and so she never would.
