Amsterdam, Australia, auctions and art
So you know how I was all pleased because my RL deadlines were over with and I could spend the weekend writing? Yeah... that didn’t happen. A new RL deadline for this Thursday has sprung up. It wouldn’t be very arduous, except for one thing which is going to make it incredibly hard: I’m spending Monday to Wednesday in Amsterdam.
HUZZAH, right? Amsterdam is a party town and a great place to be and has an awesome gay scene. I wanted to go in summer 2009 with some of my friends, and couldn’t (I spent all my money on the glory of Azkatraz and don’t regret it for a second). So when my mum said “d’you want to come with us to Amsterdam?” I said “YES!”
...Only to realise, too late, that since I’m going with my parents and sisters, getting drunk in a Dutch lesbian bar is probably off the cards.
That said, I am sort-of excited to be going and I think once I’m actually there (and able to forget all the RL reasons I shouldn’t be) I will be super excited. I’ve never been to Holland before, and we’ll do the tourist thing. Probably involving plenty of art, since Middle Sister is off to uni to study it and we’re all, to a greater or lesser extent, art fans. (I strongly suspect Youngest Sister will take advantage of those people who listen to audio-guides on their ipods to rock out to the Stooges instead of the Dutch Masters.)
Incidentally - welcome to coalition government, Oz! Good luck to Gillard, I hope she wins. Abbott’s a homophobic misogynist who’s quite ridiculously faily on environmental issues for the worst-hit developed country in the world - and he ordered a shandy with lemonade on the campaign trail. That’s no way for an Australian politician to behave.
I wonder if fandom will follow the new thing, as it so often does, and write Julia/Tony hatesex or something? Or Julia dominating virgin!Wyatt the Tiniest Liberal? (Seriously, guys, google ‘Wyatt Roy’ and you’ll see, he is a child.) ...Or maybe not. After all, I still remember this oneliner from I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue: “he died in obscurity while Prime Minister of Australia.”
Speaking of politics - sort of - help_pakistan has some seriously fantastic stuff up for grabs! Do bid - Pakistan is in need of serious help that it’s just not getting. For whatever reason - political disagreement, ‘charity fatigue’, a relative lack of media attention - and flooding carries a nasty aftermath of disease and famine even once the immediate problems have been solved, which in Pakistan’s case definitely hasn’t happened yet.
I’ve made a massive Word list of everything that appeals so I can choose my favourite stuff to bid on. GO LOOK. There’s biscuits, soft toys, fic, art, icons, post, podfic, jewellery, yarn, a Yellow Submarine badge... it’s epic! There’s also a short fic by marguerite_26 and Infinitus H/D art by sugareey.
sugareey is awesome. You know how I know this? Because I commissioned her and got some FANTASTIC art! I asked her for Snape and Draco from either DH or HBP. You can actually interpret it as either one - Snape’s lecturing Draco, and you can see his desperation - OMG that mouth, nearly a snarl - and Draco just looks trapped and miserable and SO PRETTY. *fondles his hair* Also EYELASHES. Draco’s pout v Snape’s mouth says so much.
I ♥ commissioning art, you guys. *cuddles the lovely art* Especially art like this. I love the Snape/Draco relationship, especially because stuff like this - where I interpret it as entirely platonic - is still angsty and powerful and awesome.
