This last week in my 4e game was mostly a simple dungeon crawl. I wasn't feeling up to much so I'm glad I was running a published adventure. I can (and have) run published dungeon crawls in every state of mind from mostly asleep to wired on caffeine.
But now I'm trying to address the campaign after the current dungeon and the table is getting increasing divided. My obnoxious friend leads the camp of "All Original". The idea is basically we make up the world and plot without using any established module. The other side is headed by my old-school D&D friend, who would like to continue with published material set a world, such as Dragon Lance or Greyhawk. Did I mention Old-School hates Obnoxious?
This is the same problem every company faces when they need a computer to do something: buy a program or make a new one. Making it yourself means it tailored to the players, their back stories and goals. It also means it going to be rough and lack the background of published materials. The published mods come with maps, people, plots and pictures. But the best laid-out dungeon crawl doesn't help me if I'm trying to run a game of intrigue.
So, do step out on a limb and try to pull the old-schooler into a more story focused game or do I accept 4e is tactical board game and tell the obnoxious friend he is obnoxious?
