Act now to support decriminalising abortion in Victoria

From Pro Choice Vic today:

Dear pro choice supporter,

The long-awaited bill has finally been tabled. The debate on reforming Victorian’s abortion laws is set to start in September, with hopes of a new law being passed by the end of the year.

The bill has much to be welcomed, and much to be mourned. It is wonderful that women and their partners have finally been given control of decisions about pregnancies of less than 24 weeks. It is a shame that women seeking termination after this time, mostly after diagnosis of catastrophic disability in their fetus, have been left out of the new legal deal.

The vote is expected to be tight.

The anti-choice are already insisting on amendments designed to stigmatise and shame women who choose abortion, and to delay or deny them access to safe services. They will seek to destroy the bill by imposing unnecessary regulations on abortion providers and to mandate referrals, “cooling off” periods and counselling, all in the name of “protecting” women.

If you want abortion removed from the criminal code, you must act now!
