Careful the things you say, children will listen...

You got mad at us for wasting water. You told us how sad it was that all the trees are gone. You let us watch Fern Gully, and join the Boy Scouts, and read the Lorax, and listen to Smokey Mountain. And now you wonder why we want to be environmental advocates, why we want to do sit-ins and projects and community awareness, why we never shut up about it, why we get worked up about plastic bags and the price of gas and global warming.

You used to tell us not to be vain, not to follow trends, not to waste our money on flashy clothes and designer labels. You droned on and on about how they don't make things sturdy like they used to, about what a shame it is that we live in a throw-away culture. And now you shake your heads when we shop at 2nd hand stores and vintage shops.

You never showed us how happy you were at work. You never told us it was fun, or that it fulfilled you, or that there was nothing else you'd rather be. You never told us why you were you. Everyday you'd come home and sigh. You'd sink into a chair, watch TV until bed time. In the morning, you'd grunt and heave to get out of bed. Disappear, come home, and do it all over again. And now you wonder why we don't want to get "normal" jobs.

You told us to be ourselves. You said we were smart, talented, that we had potential, that we could be whatever we wanted to be. And now you just want us to cut our hair, shave our face, buy slacks, and play it safe.

Your generation is very confusing.
