God damn you Valentine's Day (read: Universe, I'm looking at you).

I was just going to be silly about it. I was going to enjoy myself. I had my anti-Valentine's Day Marathon, all war movies, on night number 1. That's Valentine's Day in the Philippines.

On the night number 2, US Valentine's Day, I was going to do something for myself, something fun. Two bands, highly recommended by the Keepers of Cool, were going to play at a bar. I'd have a beer and catch the bus home before too late.

Then I got caught up online. Eating dinner while watching TV on Hulu.com I came across the Bones episode where Booth proposes to Hannah and she turns him down flat. I haven't seen such powerful drama on TV in a long time.

He's in a bar afterward and in walks Bones, the last woman to turn him down flat. She's being all sweet and tries to be comforting which of course only makes everything worse. The man just can't catch a break! He puts himself out there and washes up every time. And to the screenwriters' credit they don't degenerate into fantasy. Booth is appropriately mad not sniffling like a child.

This is what men do, when we are sad we are also angry.

Everything came back then. To me. I'm sitting here drinking beer and remembering.

Fucking Valentine's Day. I was going to have fun tonight.

It's okay. I'm mad but in a kind of cartoon-angry that is reflective of my belief in a Universe that is equal parts hilarious and cruel, wise and a fan of slapstick.

"Buckets of Rain"

Buckets of rain
Buckets of tears
Got all them buckets coming out of my ears
Buckets of moonbeams in my hand
You got all the love honey baby
I can stand.

I been meek
And hard like an oak
I seen pretty people disappear like smoke
Friends will arrive friends will disappear
If you want me honey baby
I'll be here.

I like your smile
And your fingertips
I like the way that you move your hips
I like the cool way you look at me
Everything about you is bringing me
Misery.

Little red wagon
Little red bike
I ain't no monkey but I know what I like
I like the way you love me strong and slow
I'm taking you with me honey baby
When I go.

Life is sad
Life is a bust
All ya can do is do what you must
You do what you must do and ya do it well
I'll do it for you honey baby
Can't you tell?
