So there was a hilarious write-up in some Minneapolis newspaper about why Americans shouldn't care about football. That was fine. But this is getting ridonculous.
I read the first paragraphs of this feature and then skimmed the rest because by about halfway down it was really starting to fucking annoy me. The writer seems to think that soccer will never catch on in America. He is wrong. The sport is still somewhat in its infancy in the States and yet already in schools the idea of girls playing the game has as much credibility as it would be for the boys to play it. That makes it universal in my eyes. You just can't say that about baseball and football
( ... )
I didn't care for any sports really when I lived in Mobile those last few years. Always had a soft spot for ice hockey and baseball, but I was never actively into watching them. It took me about a year and a half over here to get into football, and yeah, had I not moved over here, I would never have gravitated towards the game. That said, I can never recall a soccer match on telly, and I'm including the '94 World Cup that was actually held in the US, and that was when I watched ESPN all day all the time and would pretty much watch any sport I could find on the telly during the summer. It seems to me that someone only needs time and a bit of concentration to get into football, which this writer obviously hasn't done.
Anyway, what really fucks me off about the article is that CBS published it. CBS?? I thought it was meant to be a respected national media outlet.
