I am so proud of myself.  Today I went and talked to Tom Doherty, the founder and owner of Tor/Forge, the largest publisher of science-fiction and fantasy in the world, and got permission to use him as a personal reference. (!!!!!!!)

Mr. Doherty is in the office every day.  He is this quiet older man and he walks around the office and picks up new books and takes them back to his corner office, which I have discovered is devastatingly beautiful.  I made a point the very first day I saw him to introduce myself, and since that time I have tried to at least say something to him everyday, whether it is just a quiet hello, or a wave, etc.  Now that the internship is coming to a close I notice that even when I am surrounded by other interns, he smiles at me and says hello, and basically ignores the others.

Today is my second to last day at Tor and I knew that I had to speak with him in length today--now or never.  Anyway, so he walks through the office and I am in the lobby with the other interns, I promptly put my things down and I follow him down the hall.  The other interns are giving me that....wtf is this girl thinking look, but say nothing.  I catch up with him and ask him if I could have a moment of his time.  I remind him who I am, tell him that I've really enjoyed my time at Tor and that I was wondering if I could speak with him about Baen Books, a sci-fi fantasy publisher based in North Carolina that he helped found.  He asks me to come to his office (!!!) so I go and we speak briefly about the area and how much he likes it, and then I ask him if he could give me a name of someone I could get into contact with about an additional internship.  He then takes out his personal black book, Tom Doherty's PERSONAL black book, and gives me the name and phone numbers of two editors at Baen, and the Publisher, meaning the person in Mr. Doherty's position, and insists that I use him as a personal reference and say that he recommends me highly.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I still have the jitters just from speaking with him.  I am so thrilled.  This if nothing else was worth the entire summer of frustration.  Being able to say that I not only interned at a major publishing company, but am able to use the owner in my letter of reference? MAN!  I am so excited.  Hopefully Baen Books will be worthwhile.  Its not near as big as Tor by any means, but it would still be something I would enjoy doing and it is in North Carolina, which gives it that much more appeal.

I came back into the lobby with the other interns and they are just staring at me now.  This one intern asks, "What did you just do?"

I just got finished speaking with Mr. Doherty

YOU talked to Mr. Doherty?

Yup.

Thats right you Ivy-league snobs, this little southern girl from ASU just got a reference over you, simply for being persistent and friendly.  Every time Mr. Doherty enters the room they all advert their eyes and completely ignore him.  He is a person too, you know. lol

Anyway, I am so stoked.  So stoked.  So stoked.
