Homicide: Life on the Streets is like a prequel to The Wire - so fantastic. It's not as well-written and the characters aren't quite as interesting yet, but it's still really good TV. Mostly obscure character actors, some of which pop up later on in other series I like, plus it's set in the Baltimore PD Homicide Division, like parts of The Wire were.
The big thing missing so far is that there's no big, deep group of characters on the "other side" as there were with the Barksdale drug crew in The Wire. But there are at least seven seasons. Gotta pace myself.
