My observations on Human relations. It has been...interesting, at the very least.

Right. And by interesting you mean...what?

That they would sacrifice the integrity of a stable foundation for a fleeting moment of bliss.

[ Even when he's in fake love, he still harbors concern. ]

I trust I may inquire after your health?

Those fleeting moments can mean a lot to us human types. With--[She corrects herself. Sure, she had all this funny feelings about Kadaj but it totally wasn't the kind of thing she wanted to broadcast over the journals so let's go with the actuallast love.]--Jim? It was worth it.

[She sighs.] I'm alright. Thanks for asking. How've you been?

[This was probably an important conversation--after all, she had a question to ask of the crew's new acting captain.]

I see. Perhaps it is because the lifespan of Humans are so much more brief than those of other races. That is...certainly understandable. [ Buffy isn't the only one mourning the absence of the captain. If Spock had a choice, he would have been content to remain First Officer until the end of his days. ] I do believe what you shared was important to him.

[ Spock falls silent, unsure of the protocol of his next words; after all, Spock does not believe that the captain is dead. However, in Buffy's case, it is likely that she will never see him again. ]

I grieve with thee.

Thanks. [She gets enough of the sentiment, if not the clearest idea of motive. It's nice to know you're not alone and even if she's replaced the numbness with Kadaj's violence, she still aches for the quiet spaces of the morning where there were whispers and proximity and love.]

Look, Spock? With J--the Captain gone... was wondering about something. And I thought since you're the head honcho now--look, can I still stay at the house? Is that okay?

Miss Summers...

[ Spock had not been aware that this was a concern Buffy had been harboring. In retrospect, however, he should have anticipated it. His tone becomes less formal, a trickling of warmth seeping through that he would not normally allow. At the very least, he can give her this. ]

...Buffy. You are an honorary member of the Enterprise. The Captain delighted in his declaration of that fact. Irregardless of Jim's absence, you will always be a member of our crew. I would be most honored if you would remain.

Thanks. [That's a weight of her shoulders.] Extra thanks. Oodles and oodles of thanks. I'm glad I can keep on being useful.

[That out of the way, perhaps lighter subjects could follow.] So, did you and Uhura do anything nice for Valentine's?

You appear to be mistaken in your personal assessment of worth. I assure you, you have been most helpful.

[ Lieutenant Uhura? Why would he spend time with Lieutenant Uhura on a superfluous holiday designated for lovers? Perhaps Buffy was referring to their joint project? Then again, what had he done on that day? He was not in the habit of observing holidays, especially Earth-based ones...SO CONFUSED. ] I do not recall doing anything with Lieutenant Uhura on that day.

O-oh? Poor her. Just because you're all pointy-eared and logical doesn't mean you can't give a girl a nice box of chocolates, you know. The sentiment goes a long way.

[ Perhaps Buffy is unaware of the effects chocolate has on Vulcans? That is the only reason Spock can deduct for her suggestion of it. ]

For what purpose would it serve?

[Chocolate has an effect on Vulcans? Well, she's certainly unaware but perhaps she'll have to offer the guy a truffle sometime.]

Y'know, because she's your hunny and that's what you do for hunnies on Valentine's?

[ Honey? Lieutenant Uhura is a confection? ]

She is not. I do not believe she is my anything, besides a highly respected and talented officer of Starfleet.

Hey, Spock? Jim told me about you and her. There's no need to hide it from me.

[So much fail, right here.]

There is nothing to hide. Lieutenant Uhura was an exemplary cadet, and I was privileged to have her as a student and teacher's assistant.

[ He will regret this so much. ]
