across the street from a popular bus stop on my way to work is a billboard: "STOP HIV -- CONDOMISE." my first thought was "is that even a word?" my second thought was "well, it gets the idea across." but every time i pass it, a little doubt gnaws away at the back of my head -- is there enough information? will it actually make a difference? i've seen a couple of these billboards in various places in lagos. there are no other words visible -- no one seems to take credit for the add campaign, and i'd assumed that they'd only employed the one slogan.
wrong. this weekend, in ibadan (a city a couple of hours out of lagos, where a friend's brother got married this weekend), we passed another one. this one said "STOP HIV -- TOGETHER WE CAN." as i pointed out to amanda, it's a nice sentiment, but not especially informative. so we've come up with a list of slogans for nigerians that we think this anonymous organization could use in their next round of billboards:
stop HIV -- yes, you do have to use a condom EVERY time.
stop HIV -- quit cheating on your wife!
stop HIV -- go get tested already, moron.
stop HIV -- having 4 girlfriends doesn't make you more of a man.
stop HIV -- anal is not "safe sex."
stop HIV -- does it really feel that much better without a condom?
we think they'd be a hit.
