I am in St. Vincent and the Grenadines now.
didn't think i'd make it here alive. I was stuck in a Venuzuela airport sans Passport ( i left it the plane!!! STUPID NORAH!). Thankfully, someone reported it back to the embassy (LUCK...a canadian passport is worth approx. 80,000.) Anyway, I'm here..
I'm not going to lie, I'm in serious culture shock. I feel awful about it to. Because all of these years I go around saying how much I want to go to Canada World Youth etc. And here I am, feeling homesick, and completely purposeless. Mind you I am here on a sort of "vacation". But its been an odd first week being down here.
Firstly, I can't understand a word people say around here. Its interesting in trying to decipher it. Its sort of the typical Caribbean accent stereotyped. Also, people around here think that I look "wierd". According to a shopswoman today, I am too white to be around these parts, and she started laughing. I also started laughing, because this was definitely not something I hear all the time. Being half east indian, and half russian/english, generally I don't get this response. Oh well. I'm going to assume that she meant that I will sunburn easily because of my fairer skin tone. And boy was she right.
I go from waves of complete culture shock to "ok, its only 3 weeks." to "ohmygod, this place is beautiful
Its an experience. Once I get over my paranoia of being stuck here/losing my passport again, I'll be ok.
Cheers.
