Character Info

Character Name: Mail "Matt" Jeevas
Character Nickname: Red
Age: 21
Canon or AU?: AU

Point taken from canon: N/A

Appearance: Matt's about average height, 5'5", weighs 115 lbs; this makes him skinny and rather scrawny. This Matt has the fanon red hair in a slightly messy, longish cut. He has bright blue eyes, and he has pale skin with a round face, a small mouth, and a small nose with a somewhat sharp tip.

He usually wears blue jeans and a plain tee of some kind; sometimes they're striped, sometimes they're not. He rarely wears shoes or boots anymore, opting usually to just walk around everywhere barefoot, and he keeps his goggles around as a sort of security blanket, though he rarely dons them anymore.

History: "Red" was born Mail Jeevas on February 1, 1990, to single mother Irene Jeevas. His father was already absent, and his mother only mentioned him in passing. When Mail was five, Irene became terminally ill, dying just seven months after her diagnosis. Mail was immediately found by Mr. Wammy and Roger and was brought to Wammy's House in Winchester just as he turned six; as a part of his mother's will, though, Roger was forced to try to place Mail with a suitable foster home - though, while at Wammy's, he was dubbed Matt. The first home (a young, newly married couple) worked out well enough, but they sent him back to the orphanage in Winchester when they discovered they were pregnant with their own child. After barely another year spent at Wammy's with his roommate and friend Mello, Matt was sent to his second foster home, with a middle-aged couple who were unable to have children of their own, for various reasons. The Golds - Jennifer and Harry - seemed like the perfect family for Matt, but it was a false image; Jennifer worked much more than she should have, leaving Matt alone with her husband, who abused and tormented Matt in several different ways.

After some time, his abuse at the hands of Harry Gold pushed Matt too far, and he fought back one night, premeditating his foster father's murder; the plan was botched, though, by his own conscience - though Harry Gold was killed in the struggle that ensued when he awoke to find the boy standing over him with a knife. Traumatized, Matt managed to dial the orphanage, and Roger arrived with L and Mr. Wammy to bring the boy back with them to England.

Several years passed, and Mello, Matt's best friend, left Wammy's to pursue the Kira case for himself after L's passing - when Matt was fourteen, and Mello was fifteen. Matt only hung around a couple more years after Mello before leaving himself at sixteen; he took the opportunity to build a name for himself as a high-priced hacker and stalker in some of the more private circles of the world. He became very adept at using his skills for profit, and the only time his personal life ever clashed with his work occurred when he was seventeen. His assignment was to map out the schedule of one Jonas McNally. Upon receiving the photo, Matt realized that it was his long lost father, who turned out to be an enforcer for a branch of gangs in Dublin, Ireland.

However, Matt never made actual contact with the man; instead, he only followed him, copying down his schedule in its entirety, and passed it along to his clients, well aware the entire time that completing the job would probably mean that he was helping to bring about his father's death. When all was said and done, Matt just collected his fee and walked away from the situation, feigning indifference.

When Matt was nineteen, he received a call from his old friend Mello, demanding him to join in on the pursuit of Kira. He showed up where Mello told him to, intrigued by the case as a whole, and started work for Mello as the head of his surveillance, whether it was through electronic means or on foot. Upon arrival, he was filled in on some of the details of the case, though otherwise were still left unknown to him: Kira was a young woman, a model by the name of Misa Amane, and the second Kira, her helper, was her Japanese cop boyfriend and the "new L" Light Yagami. He mostly kept a close eye on Yagami, but would track Amane on occasion. Yagami was a great deal more paranoid than Amane, but she was obviously the ringleader.

On January 25th, 2010, Matt was simply playing his video game in the living room of the apartment he shared with Mello, waiting to set their plan into action the next morning. When he looked up, however, he found himself in a dim hallway. Not recognizing where he was, he was greeted by several different people - one of them including a child version of himself. The child version of himself, though entertaining and nostalgic to talk to, was obviously from a different world than he was, which matched up with what several other people had informed him: the place they were in was a mansion that was located somewhere outside the usual fabric of time, and it had the ability to move and change rooms at will and pull in duplicates of the same people from many various worlds.

Less than a week later, Red met a Misa from a world other than his - one where Misa was the second Kira - and she actually seemed to be a great deal more good and intelligent than he'd thought of his own Misa. The two began an intimate relationship, which just became more complicated after realizing that the Mello from his world was also in the mansion - and had been there for a little over a month. The three of them tried for a while to keep up the strange three-way relationship, but that wasn't what the mansion had in store for them, apparently; at around the same time, Mello and Misa both disappeared from the mansion, leaving Matt behind.

Meanwhile, Matt had already begun a relationship with another Mello in the mansion - one who apparently had been yanked mid-heart attack from his own original world (where Yagami was Kira and Amane was second Kira) to a city that was surprisingly similar to the mansion. It was a slightly unstable relationship from the start, with both young men proving to be fairly volatile. One thing that was apparent to both before too long, though, was that they were both absolutely dedicated to the other, and neither wanted to be without the other. Around the same time that Misa and Mello went missing, the other Mello (called Surly behind closed doors; note: from this point on, will refer to the Matt in question as "Red" and the Mello in question "Surly") started to unravel some of the mystery of Red's past, and he invited the lone redhead to stay in his room with him. The two had already become intimate more than once, a fact that Misa hadn't liked one bit (though the Mello from his world hadn't seemed to mind); that made it easier for Red to come to an actual decision on the subject.

A trip into the Therapy Room caused them both to tell what was bothering them at that moment, and the room caused Matt to launch into a speech that gave away the details of his childhood abuse. Surly overheard, and the two began a discussion that quickly ended in a fistfight just outside the door.

Soon after that room, the duo found themselves inside the Death Room - a room where Red was shot repeatedly, and Surly suffered the remainder of the heart attack he'd managed to escape. Constantly coughing up blood and losing consciousness, Red was in no shape to make a run for the door on his own, and Surly managed to get them both through to the door. Once outside the room, their ailments disappeared, but Red still suffered major blood loss; Surly had to carry him to the kitchen to get him to drink something. The two made their way back to their room afterward, where Surly helped Red clean up. They seemed to become much closer after that.

Not all of their trips into the mansion were bad; the next room they ended up in just knocked their age down, until they were small children. Both of them were still inseparable, however, and they made sure to stick together - until they aged back up suddenly, in the privacy of their own room, that is. Once their memories returned and both were reverted to their correct ages, Surly confessed his feelings for Red - that he did, in fact, love him. Red returned the feelings, recognizing that this was a pivotal moment in their relationship.

Not long afterward, the duo struck out again and came across the Drug Room, a room that puts its inhabitants under the influence of certain drugs, and the effects may last for some time outside the room - as was the case here: Red and Surly were both still high for a time after leaving the room, and both ended up with very vicious hangovers for a couple days afterward. One morning while he was still suffering his hangover, Red left the room he shared with Surly to make a trip to the kitchen. On the way there, he came across a B, who was apparently a new arrival. Red offered to show this B where the kitchen was and made the mistake of turning his back on the other man for barely a moment. B took that opportunity to test whether Red was right or not, about no one being able to die in the mansion. He killed Red, beating him to a pulp and dragging his body into the kitchen itself before mutilating the corpse.

Red awoke about an hour later, his entire body back to normal, but he was severely traumatized for quite some time afterward. It took a long time for him to feel comfortable leaving the room again - and when he did so the first time after the trauma, it was to chase Surly down, only to find his lover standing over his killer - and an injured L. While Surly restrained B's dead body, Red went with the L to the same room, helping him along and stitching him up when they arrived. He and Surly had a major argument when he returned to their room later.

The next time they spoke, it was in the Truth Room, where they could tell no lies. The room forced them to face the problems they'd been having with one another, and it ended badly. Red left the room as soon as the door reappeared and headed straight for the room he'd once shared with Misa and the Mello from his original world. That was where Surly found him quite some time later, drunk and unreasonable. The two fought again, and Surly left - only to return a couple days later, also drunk and borderline delusional from lack of sleep. He crawled into bed with Red, and they made up, falling asleep together. When Surly awoke, he found himself alone; Red had disappeared.

When he awoke, Red was back in his own world, sitting on the sofa in the living room of Mello's apartment, as though no time had passed. Both of them remembered the time they'd spent in the mansion, and there was an argument. Mello threw Red out of the apartment, forbidding him from participating in the plot that was supposed to occur the next day. He found himself in a bar when the news report of the fire at the church came on, drowning his sorrows in several shots of whiskey.

For the following two years, he went back to his old way of life: following people and hacking to make money. Everything caught up with him, though, when he set himself on following a big name in a branch of the mafia, and he was taken by surprised, stabbed repeatedly in the side by an enforcer. Red was left to slowly bleed out onto a sidewalk in Italy; it was 7:32 am, January 7, 2012.

When he woke again, Red found himself on the floor of the hallway in the mansion; Surly was one of the first to come across him. He helped the blond back to their room shortly after discovering that he had only been gone from the mansion for a little under a week; his lover still hadn't gotten the sleep he needed in his absence.

Red still had problems getting back into the swing of the way the mansion operated, and he had an even more difficult time coming to terms with his death. Before too long, he found himself trapped in a room that was very much like the horror video game he'd loved during life - Silent Hill. Surly found him inside it before too long, and they both fought their way back out - but Red was the only one who made it out unscathed; Surly was caught and killed by Pyramid Head, one of the more well-known and terrifying bosses in the Silent Hill games. He woke in the hallway, where Red found him and steered him back to their room.

Not long after that episode, they found themselves in the Good and Evil Room - where both males were split in two: a good half and an evil half. The good halves had to stand by and watch as their evil halves "went at it" in more ways than one. More issues were brought to light, though they seemed to make up after leaving the room.

After this, though, Surly seemed to become more determined to find a way out of the mansion for them both, one that would make sure they stayed together. This caused quite a bit of tension between them.

Personality: Red is your basic Matt; he has a very indifferent and uncaring attitude when it comes to anything but himself and his lover. He has a love for video games and chainsmoking, and he doesn't do anything to impress anyone else. He's also quite lazy, but he gets bored relatively easily and will seek things to occupy his mind and time if the need arises.

He's not a very social creature, especially after his multiple deaths; Red normally keeps to himself, opting out of greeting new arrivals at the mansion now, in order to avoid a reoccurrence of the trauma caused by B. He's not easily trusting, but he does know how to defend himself, and that helps his ability to let people close to him. He can be somewhat gullible, though, which is another story entirely.

He's somewhat resentful of the entire Wammy's setup, and he doesn't normally enjoy the company of most Ls. Red really only likes the presence of Mellos and Matts and the occasional Misa. Dating one really improved his outlook on the lot of them.

He knows how to cook a fair amount, and he actually likes to show off his slight talent for it on occasion. Most of the things he cooks are recipes he learned from watching his mother before she died. He has an Irish accent that only appears when he's under extreme stress; the rest of the time, Red's words have a surprising lack of accent. He speaks many languages that were taught at Wammy's (including English, Russian, Japanese, French, Spanish and Latin) but he has a natural talent for French, because that was his original language.

Red's actually surprisingly Mello-like. He has a snarky outlook on life, and he's not afraid to be honest or blunt. He knows plenty of self-defense and he can hold his own in a fight; this gives him quite a bit of confidence that he normally wouldn't find in himself otherwise.

Writing Sample 1: [Things are less than satisfactory between them lately, but that isn't something that Matt can see an easy solution for. Instead of dealing with the oppressive tension that just seemed to be constantly building back in their bedroom, he made a mad dash for the kitchen just down the hall, ready to stir up some more of his famous - or not really that famous - hot chocolate.

Once it's finished, he pours some into a mug from the cabinet before taking it and sitting down at the table nearby. Blowing on it, he leans back in the chair, pondering the current situation.

Option One: They could stay in the mansion, possibly forever. This seems to be the more likely scenario, if not the safest, considering that's Matt's dead now, and Mello is... close.

Option Two: He lets Mello do his voodoo thing and maybe magically whisk them away to somewhere that doesn't experiment on them like a pair of test rabbits.

Okay, maybe that isn't the best analogy ever, but Matt can't make himself care as he sips at his hot chocolate. With a sigh, he figures that it can't hurt; if he lands somewhere that Mello's not, he could just... Die.

Again.

He sighs.]

Writing sample 2: [Matt isn't sure what to think about things anymore. Everything is screwed up and up in the air, and he can't help hating it. Being dead isn't what he expected, but he's not sure if it's worse or better yet.

Well, it's obviously better, since he's moving around and breathing and he has a beating heart - a fact Mello makes sure he knows as often as possible, making it hammer in his ears as often as he can. The insatiable prat.

He loves him, though. It's still strange sometimes, to think that he loves another person more than he loves himself - and likewise. Both of them have always been so selfish, so self-reliant. Now they have each other.]

Is that fucked up or normal? [he wonders out loud. Sad that he doesn't know the difference anymore.]
