The 2012 meme

LJ has fallen over again, so this may only show up on DW for now, but as I'm back from a (very nice, thank you) short holiday, I wanted to post something. And yes, it does technically mean two MLP-related posts in a row. That prohibition expired at the end of 2012, according to a decree by me. =:P Actually, more ponystuff than before will be going on Louder Yay instead, so the overall level of equinity on here will go down. I'm just going to stop being so rigid about it. Anyway, here we go!

It's that time of the year again, ie after its end. And so it seems reasonably appropriate to do the usual "end of year" meme. Though perhaps one year I'll do it in March, just to annoy people. =:P The 40 questions are the ones you usually get, so here goes:

1. What did you do in 2012 that you'd never done before?
I exposed myself to ridicule on the internet for being part of a large yet frequently mocked fand... oh, hang on a minute. =:P Something I'd really never done before was to ride behind a 1930s streamlined steam locomotive. (This one.) That was fantastic.

2. Did you keep your New Year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I can't remember whether I made any! Which probably counts as a no... as for next year, I think staying in touch with certain people a bit more would certainly be on the list.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Nope.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
No, although people close to people close to me did.

5. What countries did you visit?
England. Wales. Scotland. =:P

6. What would you like to have in 2013 that you lacked in 2012?
Fully developed social skills. I won't, of course, but it would be nice!

7. What date from 2012 will remain etched upon your memory?
Several days with friends apart? Probably 4th August: "Super Saturday" at the Olympics, with three athletics gold medals in the space of under an hour. Actually, the Olympics and Paralympics as a whole were unforgettable, vastly better than so many people were fearing earlier in the year.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Writing things. For other people. Who actually liked them.

9. What was your biggest failure?
Being rejected by Equestria Daily. It wasn't the fact of the rejection that hurt, it was the sheer dismissive nature of it. "This isn't good enough to meet our standards; sorry" would have been fine.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Apart from the continuing saga of my eye-lasering, no. At least I didn't get shingles this year, and that's worth a lot on its own!

11. What was the best thing you bought?
The box set of issue #1 of the My Little Pony comic. And yes, this is a serious answer.

12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
My friends. Of course.

13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
George Osborne and various callous Tories. Again.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Assuming we're talking spare money rather than boring old expenses, then either books or pony-related stuff.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Once they'd started, the Olympics and Paralympics. Easily the best things that happened this summer.

16. What song/album will always remind you of 2012?
Well, duh.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:

a. Happier or sadder?
Happier! Admittedly part of that is because 2011 was one of the worst years of my life, while 2012 was merely rather mixed, but still. There's no doubt in my mind at all that I'm happier than I was a year ago. =:)

b. Thinner or fatter?
About the same, I think. I currently weigh 12 stone 5 lbs, which is possibly a couple of pounds less than last year. Ideally I'd like to be about half a stone lighter than I am now, but I'm not really worried about my weight.

c. Richer or poorer?
I'd be slightly richer were it not for these confounded ponies...

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Rabbiteering. This is the answer I gave last year, and for the same reason: very poor summer weather.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Failing to eat pork pies. =;)

20. How will you be spending/did you spend Christmas?
At home, eating. Yay for a traditional Christmas. =;)

21. Who did you spend the most time on the phone with?
As usual, my grandmother, since she's the only person I really speak to by phone in the first place.

22. Did you fall in love in 2012?
Please stop asking this question. You know the embleer answer by now.

23. How many one night stands in this last year?
I prefer to lie down.

24. What was your favourite TV programme?
Apart from you-know-what? I was pleased to find that Red Dwarf X was, for the most part, genuinely funny.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
Did I know who Jeremy Hunt was this time last year?

26. What was the best book(s) you read?
Frost Dancer: A Story of Hares by Garry Kilworth. I've read it before, but it took me far too long to get round to reading it again. I regret that now.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
"A Pony Like Me" by Replacer. It sounds like The Beach Boys. You think I'm joking, don't you? I'm not.

28. What did you want and get?
Sprouts.

29. What did you want and not get?
A "no action needed" eye diagnosis.

30. What were your favourite films of this year?
I don't often watch feature films, actually, so I don't really know.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
It was a Tuesday, so nothing very special. I think I may have eaten some cheese, though. I was exactly one year older than last year.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
The arrest and imprisonment of most of the Cabinet on trumped-up charges of... well, anything would do, really. =:P

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2012?
I don't do fashion. I wear reasonably colourful T-shirts and black trousers and that about covers it.

34. What kept you sane?
I wasn't aware that I had been sane...

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Bleah.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
It's a tie between the NHS and public transport.

37. Who did you miss?
Pretty much the same people I always miss: those who are no longer with us and those who I've lost touch with.

38. Who was the best new person you met?
I met the excellent Hawthorn (hawthornowl) for the first time in person, though I've known him for some time online.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2012.
Friendship is magic. Oh come on, what did you expect? =;)

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year?
The fire of friendship lives in our hearts,
As long as it burns we cannot drift apart.

(Daniel Ingram, "The Heart Carol".)
