Zombieland
I saw this movie as a free pre-screening and I would willingly pay at least matinee price, maybe even full price, to see it again. It is enormously fun. The movie is really pretty simple. It's been compared to Shaun of the Dead, but I think that comparison misses the point. Shaun of the Dead plays with the conventions and tropes of a zombie movie and does it well. Zombieland does some of the same (the various hilarious Rules laid down by the protagonist) but the real strength of Zombieland is that it tries something even more unique. It uses the trope of a Zombie apocalypse as a frame to build a coming-of-age story.
I imagine that if John Hughes had ever tried his hand at the zombie genre, it might've turned out looking something like this. It's like Hughes and George Romero were good pals and decided to collaborate on a film. George says "Hey, let's make a zombie film!" And Hughes nodding his head good-naturedly at his friend and saying "Sure, sure, but let's add a geeky kid in there, and a rebel, and a hot girl..." And go on from there until you get a weird cross between "Dawn of the Dead" and "The Breakfast Club".
And if you think that sounds like a really WACKY premise for a film, well... yeah.
That's Zombieland.
