I spent 45 days in France int he summer of 1994. It was wonderful. The people were wondeful. Three weeks of that time were in Paris. I spent three whole days at the Lourve. When I came back to America and told my stories, people, especially my parents and grand parents couldn't believe that I had such a good time and the people were so welcoming and accepting.

I think the theory is probably dead on.

I'm jealous of your 45 days in France! Longest I've ever managed is two weeks, though I admit I'm very lucky to have visited Europe as much as I have.

The stories of French people being unwelcoming of American tourists probably came back with the sorts of people who'll get a bad reception anywhere -- the large, loud, pushy, poorly dressed, cheap, demanding tourist type. Stay away from those, and you're good.

Also, seeing your username, I'll add that I found one of the best single malt Scotch whiskies I've ever tasted in a chateau in Normandy. The guy who ran that tiny bar was tickled to chat with me about it. (I guess most of his customers are happy with Dewars. *shudder*)
