As far as I know they were overwhelming favourites, definitely before the WC, European champion, Barcelona, etc etc. They are mostly one of the favourite because they always have good players but it didn't always work out.
Spain were favourites last time. They mysteriously became favourites as soon as the tournament started in 2008 (Germany HAD been favourites up until then) when the odds were re-adjusted in their favour.
Argh. Thanks a bunch EA. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE this scenario, but it's just bad voodoo. We haven't exactly looked world beating recently.
Wesley Sneijder has predicted another Netherlands/Spain rematch, so I can only hope that pride goeth before a fall, and all that. :p At least none of our guys is is expecting to win. Not only would Jogi not allow it, but the Bayern CL loss knocked any incipient hubris out of them.
I'm hoping for a Monty Python result: When you least expect it, expect it! :D
The Dutch haven't look all that great either. The experts on television are all: 'if they are all in good shape and want to play for each other, than we can do well.' Sneijder hasn't looked too good in the last two years, there is the whole Huntelaar/Van Persie debate and their defence is more of a mess than ours. Every country still has some issues to work on, I think. :D
I admit that I am not-very-secretly hoping the Dutch melt down into an ego-ridden puddle somewhere around the quarters or semis! :D It's not like they don't have a history of personality issues.
Though I am much more interested in who the dark horse is ... France? Poland? Both have the players to do very well, and make it to the semis, if everything comes together for them. Not sure about England. They may be utterly awful, or they may be so annoyed at everyone thinking they're crap that they pull a Chelsea on us and make it to the semis.
Stan Collymore, btw, has tweeted that players to look out for are Papadopoulos (go Papa!), Eriksen of Denmark, and Oxlade-Chamberlain.
I'm rather terrified for the tournament. I know that we can win it, but that does not mean that we will win it. We'll see what happens, I guess. As long as the boys give it their all, I will be satisfied.

Lahm looks so tall in that picture!

We were "favourites" in 2008 until the day the tournament started when the bookies chose Spain.
When money's involved, they normally get it right.
